Irritation below the jaw and on the neck

Hello. I shave daily with 3 passes(WTG, XTG AND ATG). I get irritation below the jaw and on the neck. I use D'amaris shave cream or Palmolive shave cream, a Whipped Dog 22 mm knot silvertip badger brush, a Wilkinson Sword Classic(the one you get from the supermarket) and a Gillete blue or red blade. No matter how smooth of a touch I use with the razor I get irritated. I also have problems with creating a lather. I apply the cream on he brush and then to my face, but by the 3'rd pass the lather is very thin. Any solutions?

Hi Alex7

IMHO; Try two passes i.e. WTG and XTG for a while. Give your skin a chance to heal. Or even take a day or two off before you shave again dependent on the intensity of your irritation.

You could also try a milder blade, but I can't necessarily recommend one as YMMV.

During my shower I bloom my soap. When I exit the shower, I splash more hot water on my beard, empty the bloom water out of the soap, load my synthetic brush with some water, and whip up a one/two minute lather. I then spend a longer time face lathering, working in the soap, lifting hairs, creating more volume in the lather until I'm able to paint my face ready for the first pass. I have enough lather in the brush for another two passes, but I only need some for the second pass and touch up.

Start by changing one element at a time. I would suggest stopping the 3rd ATG pass. It's notorious for causing irritation plus you say your lather isn't good by the time you go to the 3rd pass. If you are using poor lather then you won't be getting any protection. If that doesn't stop the irritation, try a different soap. Something mild scented or unscented.
What are you using as aftershave?

I started shaving only in the evening instead of the morning and that solved practically all of my shaving woes

Palmolive shave cream for me takes some work to get a good lather. A drop or two water too much and it performs poorly.
Could be that after rinsing between passes you're leaving your face too wet, causing the lather to turn runny ?
Good advice above re not shaving ATG on the neck. It took me what seemed like eons to perfect my technique shaving my neck area and now I use a mixed WTG/ATG in this area. (It's not essential to be BBS all over - you'll be shaving again the following day anyway)

Hi, Alex. I have the same problems, with the razor irritation and lather creating.

With razor rash one of the solutions is to only use two passes. Generally the first should be in the direction that the hair grows and the second gentle one can be against the grain. Also how soon after getting up do you shave? The skin on your face swells slightly over night as you are laying down, shaving too soon after rising can cause irritation and a not so close shave. If you can wait for at least 30 mins after getting up to have your shave.

I got really bad neck rash with the first shaving cream I tried ToOBS Sandalwood, it seemed quite harsh on my skin. I switched to Mitchell's Wool fat shaving soap. It gives a much more moisturising, much less harsh lather and leaves my skin feeling really moisturised even before I apply after shave balm. My neck's been fine since I started using. Not affiliated, just a happy shaver.
