Cheaney leather mules, with thin leather soles, last a very long time; I purchased seconds from their factory shop in Northampton and have had them re-soled once. Went up to Northampton to have a look round Alfred Sargent and Edward Green's factories, looking at shoes being bench made / hand finished - very interesting and purchased quite a few pairs of shoes (and shoe trees) at Cheney and Churches factory shops.

After getting increasingly fed up of buying bog standard carpet slippers that fell apart after little more than a year, I discovered kilim slippers. These are the same shape as ordinary slippers but are made from flat-woven Turkish carpet and have a thin leather sole and a heel. Stylish, comfortable and different. My first pair must have lasted five or six years and I'm approaching that with my second. Unfortunately the firm that made them doesn't seem to be in business any longer but I see a Turkish bloke on Etsy selling them. Those sold by the posher British shoe merchants are absolutely extortionate!
