I just don't want easy...

I have both the aforementioned Feather Portable and the Muhle older style open comb R41. The Muhle is beautiful and hefty, but super aggressive – probably the most aggressive non adjustable. The Feather is dirt cheap and very good... pretty aggressive too. I recommend you try it... I normally use it with a LUX handle, because it's longer, heavier and more fun. Ooh-er.

Im not sure where the vintage line is... but this puppy a 1956 Gillette # 58, http://mr-razor.com/Rasierer/One-Piece% ... ngland.JPG requires that I pay 101% attention to angles, or else. Get it right & it is the best razor I have used.

I hear that Ikon razors are close too hard to use.

Hi G-Train, nice to see you back. Where have you been all this time?

Thanks :)

I read a few posts now and then but I work every day for hours on the computer... and then watch shows and films on the computer at night with my lady, so I've had less time these days. Also had a month-long working holiday in Portugal visiting my parents recently. It rained every day and I got a horrific stomach flu down there, but got over it quickly.

Been meaning to post more here and will make an effort!

Haven't been able to get hold of a #58 fozz but that does give me an idea about trying to procure one.

Audiolab is sending me his older R41 so I look forward to trying that when it arrives.

Oh and good to see you g train, hope you got yourself some nice creams during your hols.

Although discontinued, still available through Pauldog, the excellent Feather Portable is very aggressive. I use mine with a handle from a crud Parker to give it touch more heft.

Wow , I didn't realise that. I am a newbie to DE shaving and this is all I use at the moment (I have a couple of vintage Gillettes enroute from the States at the moment). I find it really nice to use (tried Tesco Personnas thus far) with very few nicks and no soreness.

Trust me to start at the wrong end of the scale!

It's not wrong KRF, just different. Won't do any harm learning with an "aggressive" razor, you'll learn quickly.

Cheers Antdad, I am enjoying shaving with the Portable so you may be right. I am a tad worried about the open comb vintage Gillette as they look a tad scary to the uninitiated.

Should be a couple of weeks before it arrives from the US so time to practice with my current setup!

Now't to be worried about with an open comb, those teeth just make it look more aggressive. As Vic says the combination of blade/razor is more critical, you can negate a so called "aggressive" razor by using milder blade. The Tesco IP is a good all rounder.

Just out of curiosity, what does the open comb add/change in a razor?

Cheers

There's no guard bar so the blade can get to longer hair.

Sound plausible but I'm not even truly convinced of that to be honest Joe.
