How many of you struggle going against the grain?

I used to struggle for many many years. Initially I could do it only if I would shave once per week. I then forced my self to shave every 2 days (initially with some skin repercussion), I also switched to an aggressive razor (I'm currently using Fatip piccolo OC), and now I can easily go ATG and I can shave every 2 days. ;)

Interestingly I have found a method that works and which some of you may see as sacrilege...for the third pass I have tried using a wet and dry electric shaver which actually leads to a BBS shave for me. It might assist some of you that are looking for BBS but struggle going ATG.

I always shave against the grain, at first I would get some irritation but that was down to technique. I can shave every day atg but choose not to as I prefer the feel after 2-3 days not shaving I find doing it this way gives me the perfect shave every time, I do use a mild razor as d2 with feather or Kai blade and my beard growth isn't heavy like it is for some.

My first pass is now ATG with an efficient razor like R41, MMOC or 1912, or even an Old Type or Fatip. It needs a sharp blade and fresh enough so it doesn't tug, and with such a sharp blade I have no problems. I try and use as few strokes as possible with a very efficient razor so I don't build up irritation by going over the same patch multiple times.

What about XTG but the opposite way? Would this make any difference do you think?
Worth a try if it reduces the stubble. Try a few different blade angles especially a shallow blade angle. Steep blade angles may be the cause of the irritation as it is a more scraping action.
I have never had a problem with ATG.

First post in many months (l-o-n-g story).

I struggled with ATG on the neck for a while, but now do it daily with no problem. It's a combination of preparation and technique - I spend a few minutes making sure the beard is really well prepped with hot water and a lot of brush action. I have a little spot under my chin which is particularly tough, and once I can feel that the whiskers are softened there, I know I'm good to go. The technique is mainly confidence: I was tentative at first, thinking that an ATG pass would be difficult, and of course I ended up suffering because I was frightened to commit. I tend to shave with a fair bit of pressure, and I think (that's) helpful for ATG as it reduces the risk of the razor skipping. My shaving angle is on the steep side but I don't consciously vary it - I just commit to it with a firm pressure and a bold stroke. But if I haven't prepped enough, I'll be in strife - so I never skimp on the prep.

stopped trying the so called against the grain pass oh, about my 3rd week of shaving. Somehow or other, 80% of all bleeding stopped, 90% of all shaving discomfort disappeared.

Since then I only go with the grain, savs time, effort, irritation, bleeding. And its much more effective.
