How do you choose your watch?

So my day-to-day watch is starting to show signs of wear, and I'm thinking about getting a new one. My issues has always been that I've wanted something different from my watch rather than just tells the time and looks good. My current watch, for example, is a Timex Exhibition (or something like that) and it has a built in a compass (and thermometer and tide times). Then, as the start caused my skin to flare up, I swapped the leather strap for a nice metal one, so it is one of a kind!

The problem comes when I'm looking to replace it. The spec is quite simple:
- £150 or so would be the max budget
- must tell the time
- must have a metal strap (or at least be able to take a metal strap, but cost of replacement would be part of original budget)
- prefer an analogue display (but nixie tube, binary or any random display like that would be cool)
- must be different in some way....

Now the Timex Metropolitan+ is quite nice to my eyes, but it is part of the whole "fitness tracker" band wagon that I don't want to be on. But at least it's not a Fitbit. I basically have a problem that I don't know what feature other than "time" I want in my watch. And when I have a low budget, the market is flooded with normal watches I could easily get.

Any advice guys?

Have you thought about Russian Vostok watches, Google - Meranom he is an excellent seller and the SE models are very good.
Avoid Vostok Europe they are made in Lithuania not Russian at all.

I have had many Vostok watches they have a certain character and charm, the wobbly crown, awful straps but bullet proof build, so many stories of their almost indestructibility are amazing considering the price of them.

I'm a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to watches and prefer mechanical as opposed to quartz/digital. Would endorse Rufus as regards Seiko.

Creationwatches.com are very competitive in price, they sell Seiko 5 and Orient watches, both mechanical/automatic brands.
Based in Singapore I purchased one from them at the beginning of the year. I took up the offer of tax & VAT inclusive shipping to the EU, which worked well if slowly.

My watch needs to also be a phone. Other than that and displaying time I'm old so showing the date, day and month helps. Showing the year even better. Reminding me what it is I'm doing would be great but so far I find they all lie or are unsure.

Thanks for the input guys.

One little search I did seemed to point me towards FORSINING watches... Apparently a company in China that is trying to be a high end brand and a sensible price. Anyone got one?

I also think the size of the dial is important,I have a lovely accurist but having a slim wrist the watch looks massive
