I think if I actually wanted to save money I could have bought a perfectly good synthetic brush, bog standard soap without a bowl, and used an old dish from around the house as a bowl. It probably would have saved me about £40.

Yep I started with EJ98,Wilkinson brush, Palmolive stick. Lasted 2 or 3 years then stumbled on this site.
8 razors, 1 straight, strops, paddles and more soaps, creams and blades than I can possibly use in 2 lifetimes later.
Haven't spent anything in ages though. And yes I would do it again (y) :)

I was doing quite well till I seen a Woosty in my price range along with another (un named )straight, both cleaned up well but were a bugger to hone, all nice n shave ready now tho, I intended to shave with em tonight but by the time I had finished honing I just wanted a cop of tea!, shave will take place tomorrow PM :)

Well eventually got round to it and was very happy with the woosty, nice smooth shave with no complaints. TBH so far the only problems I get are when I slide on my prep, it cannot be coincidence, so imo prep is ( as you all know ) a big part of achieving a good shave, find your prep preferences and stick to em.

Hey everyone,

I've been shaving my whole head for over two years now. I started with an electric shaver but then I wanted an actual smooth shave instead of head stubble. So maybe a bit under two years ago I started using my Gillette cartridges to shave my head.

Anyway for three main reasons I've been getting interested in more traditional shaving methods: environmental reasons, cost reasons, and
quality of the shave.

1) Environmental reasons

I was kind of horrified with the amount of plastic that gets thrown away with cartidge razors. I kept thinking there must be a better way.

2) Cost

I came to realise that the whole industry of cartridge razors is a racket that locks you into the company's product and they basically rip off forever after.

3) Quality of shave

I keep getting patches of redness at the top of my neck where it joins onto the back of my head, and also a little band along the back of my crown. I've tried to improve my technique but the redness seems to be persisting.

I was hoping that older-fashioned shaving methods like a safety razor or straight razor may get the smooth head shave that I like in fewer passes and therefore irritate my skin less (at the cost, perhaps, of more nicks and cuts). I also want to throw away less stuff in the process and save money in the long run.
Welcome. They are a very helpful group on here
