I am a straight shaver (with a Futur as a backup)

There my knowledge of DE stops.

I have introduced my son the DE shaving by buying a gillette from boots.

I want to get him a decent razor (he is an impoverished student)

Question what should I get??

Any comments??

seen this for £18.50 on B&B

It's a good choice...but if he doesn't or won't appreciate a vintage razor like a good friend of mine for a touch more money have a look at the Muhle R41

The R41 is a much more aggressive razor than a Superspeed. With experience, it would give a fine close shave but would not be such a good choice for someone with a sensitive skin. The Jagger DE87 would be a safer bet for someone new to DE shaving. At £20, another good buy.

Fido, I just don't understand the whole aggresive thing. The R41 is very smooth and extremely efficient - if handled carefully - as are all DE razors. I also find the Slant very mild and I'm able to drive that around my face at a rate of knots.

It's the blades (IMHO) which make the difference when matched to different razors.

It's the comparison between an open and closed comb. The latter is simply easier to use. I agree that the open comb gives a great shave - it's the 'handle carefully" necessity that would make me wary of it for a relatively new DE shaver.

I don't know about the DE87 but it is a common misconception that an open comb is somehow more aggressive, the open comb style is just that, a style of safety bar. It's the usual suspects that affect razor aggression, blade gap, exposure and head profile.

As for giving a beginner a mild shaver, well that's up to you, when I shave badly I tend to have sensitive skin.

I personally found the R41 to be a moderate shaver, stick some Feathers in it and it becomes a less forgiving but still moderate, stick something else in it and it does indeed becomes more usable. The mildest option though is certainly the SS.

Actually a better TTO option might be the English Flair Tip Rocket that Magicpixie has for sale for £20 in the B/S/T.

Good choice. The SS is a mild shaver and had very nice TTO blade-change. Also, nice to own something classic and vintage.

I love Super Speeds.
