Hi chaps I've been struggling for years with shaving and getting fed up of having to pay the barber to do it I suffer badly with a rash too when I use mainstream products and I've tried all sorts of razors am really at a loss can someone help me thanks

Hi Jimjam and welcome to TSR. There's no shortage of wet shaving products available outside of the mainstream. It's probably going to be a process of elimination to find out what works for you. It's well known that shaving with a single blade is better for your skin than multi blade cartridges but there is a period of learning in this and won't cure your problem over night. There'll also be some soaps/creams that work brilliantly for you but it will take some trial and error to see if you're fine with good quality shaving soaps/creams or whether you require something from their 'sensitive' ranges.

Can I suggest you introduce yourself in the welcome section? There's also wealth of knowledge in the libraries of this forum. It will also be worth contacting @Mbarn to get on the waiting list for the newbie pass around. This will give you a chance to try a few different products for only the cost of postage to the next new joiner.

Hello, I see you mentioned going to a barber for a shave, ask him / her what shave soap he / she uses on you and that will be half the problem sorted.
As for a razor I would start off with a Muhle R89 as so many of us here have and try an Astra SP double edge blade with with that razor.
I'm assuming you can make a good lather.....but if not there are lots of YouTube videos that show you not only how to lather but to shave with a double edge Safty razor as well.
You will find all you need to know from here and YouTube , just ask and you will be helped , we are a friendly bunch here.
It would be great to see you say hi to everyone in the welcome section as has been said above.
Good luck. P.

Hi buddy...
I always used an electric razor until about a year ago when I managed to smash it on the floor...... But I'm so glad I did.
For a few weeks/months I struggled with weird chin rashes & spots but it all seems to fall into place all of a sudden.
A couple of things I found helped are as follows.
Pre Shave.
Use a preshave cream or oil... Especially good after a shower, apply it as soon as your out of the shower and spend a few minutes doing something else..... Brush your teeth or do your hair etc...

Post Shave
As soon as you have rinsed off the last of the soap from your final pass, try applying some Witch Hazel. I found it helped the sensitive areas of my face.

BBut there are many other variables, so do some digging and ask some more questions. You'll be a happy shaver in no time.

Hi Jimjam, it is good to see that you came here. As can be seen from the responses, the members here can help you a great deal. In addition to what they have mentioned, Dr. Shave's Book of Shaving is also a good resource https://www.executive-shaving.co.uk/dr-shaves-book-of-shaving.

Don't worry, with the right information and a little practice, your shaves will be much improved. Countless thousands of men have done it before, so you can do it too.

Awright Jimjam, welcome, Im fairly new to this shaving malarky but i would say take all of the advice above with the addition of doing a beard map. It helped me with a small trouble spot. Here's a great video on doing that . Awra best.

A big +1 for this. Learn yourself first and then take it from there.

Otherwise there are some great tips given here. The R89 (if you PM me I have a few spare and happy to loan/give) and the witch hazel are two great hints
