Help me choose my second DE razor...

With an adjustable you can increase efficiency as your technique improves. I had a Progress which went 'missing' while I was in the Middle East. I didn't replace it. I now have a Variant....and that is a keeper.....even though I am on a single edge binge at the moment. The Variant was my Wedding Day shave.

Thanks for that. How do you find the 34G compared to the R89 head? (I think the MÜHLE R89 is the same head as the Edwin Jagger DE89).
The MÜHLE and EJ R89 heads are the same, it was a joint development. If pushed, the R89 is better, I use the 34G most of the time though. Having said that I'm also looking for a new razor. Of those you mentioned, only the outlaw is on my list. Don't forget TSR member get a discount saving you 10% at exec shaving.

You can get the mergress, that has the plastic replaced with a metal knob but it puts it out of your price range. P.

Thank you for pointing that out. I noticed there is a British-made Progress upgrade as well (the "Digress" sold by Gentleman's Groom Room). I think the replacement knob looks much smarter. Just need to decide whether it's worth paying the extra, or whether I should risk the QC issues with the Parker Variant, which is very very similar and (to my eye) a smart looking razor.

Thanks, yes the Outlaw looks great. It's out of stock at the moment but I emailed their customer services over the weekend and they said it would be back in stock in 10 days or so.

What other razors are on your list?

Ive also had the Parker Variant and i found it to be a very good razor indeed. P.

Also on my list
  • Rockwell 6S - these seem to come up on eBay frequently.
  • Rex Ambassador
  • Karve SS (most likely will go for this one)
  • Outlaw, as mentioned

If your looking for an adjustable then you really won't go far wrong with a Rockwell 6c or 6s. I used mine for over a year and loved it. Just bought myself a Merkur futur which has been incredible. Futur not for everyone tho as the head is quite big but I have no issues with it.

On this same question.

I have an EJ89, which is great.

I more often use my Merkur 20c, because its milder and smoother (so i can be sloppier with it !) , but it sometimes struggles to bite properley on the tougher stubble and i use the EJ89 to finish off, as its a little more aggressive.

Realistically, if i got an adjustable, could i / would i use an aggressive higher setting for the main shave, then switch to a low setting for safe tidy up ?

Is that what people do with adjustables or, as has been suggested, just end on one all-round setting ?

Thanks, that's a great list. I would love a Rex Ambassador but sadly I just can't get away with that much money on a razor right now...

Whatever you choose I hope it works out for you!

You can use an adjustable razor to fit your needs, there are no fixed rules as to how you use one, start at a high setting and adjust down to tidy up, that's cool! :) P.

Thanks, I saw your thread and there were some interesting replies. What did you go for in the end?

Merkur Progress gets a lot of mentions but I just can't get over the big blob of discoloured plastic on the end of the handle. Really spoils the look for me. I would definitely try the Gamechanger but there don't seem to be many stockists in the UK (Connaught don't have it!).
Ended up with nothing so far lol most of my working life i'm in Norway and i got a call back quicker than i wanted so it's scuppered the idea until i get back home which should be the end of august. But to be honest i think i'm looking for something more aggressive

I think a Fatip open comb would suit you and it is an all brass head. You have a choice of the Grande or Piccolo handles.
I would still reccommend the Merkur Progress with it's iconic ivory knob.
