Handy software

As an aside from the Firefox addons, handy pieces of software you've found over the years and use regularly

For me, my number one discovery was HFS (http file server) - dead simple, single freeware executable allows you to share files with whomever you like, very handy for copying huge files/folders from one PC to another.

Cobian Backup

Cobian Backup is a multi-threaded program that can be used to schedule and backup your files and directories from their original location to other directories/drives in the same computer or other computer in your network. FTP backup is also supported in both directions (download and upload).

Great little backup utility, might even tie in with HFS.

Get_iplayer... what a stunningly amazingly good piece of software - for those times that you want to watch (or listen to) something from the BBC iPlayer without access to t'internet.

Slightly kludgy in that it mostly relies on the command line, but even SWMBO can operate it.

Thanks for that HM, will do it tomorrow. Talking of terminal applications, I find Links + Surfraw very handy for lightning fast text based browsing and searching; similarly Yubnub comes in handy from time to time in Firefox. The first two will be in all Linux repositories; Yubnub's here:

Edit: forgot to mention Dillo, a rather shaky but blisteringly fast graphical web browser: again it should be in the repositories.
