Good riddance to DE shaving!

I think I'd say that modern cartridges probably shave too close. They are not sub-par.

That too close a shave was too much for me and after a couple of decades of getting closer and closer, I'd had enough. I have a couple of patches on my face where I have to be careful with a DE. Too close and it goes a little mushy and I risk ingrowers. I get the same with Schicks.

Single edge and straight edge suits me just perfectly. It's not that I don't get a close shave, I just don't get a sub-skin shave.

Tools are tools ... it's how we wield them.

For me, I love the older razors and if I'd not discovered single edge I would have happily remained a DE shaver and still not gone (back) to cartridges.

This for me as well.

I had big problems getting my shave right. I couldn't get lather consistent and was nicking myself so much I looked like hamburger.
The considerate members here talked me through it, I get lather right, rarely nick myself, unless I use too much pressure. I never gave up though through all the problems. I wanted to work through my problems. You can't expect to get it right from the set-go like you can with a cartridge. That's snap on and off you go. For me, shaving is now a pleasure, and my hobby.

I'm at a similar stage to Dave and seem to be
going through similar peaks and troughs.
My lather has been a bit off lately but then
Ive been experimenting with different sticks.

Last night I had a truly woeful shave. Lather too loose,
missed a couple of patches around the mouth but hey, its
socially acceptable and it will all grow back.

I'll get another chance to practice
tomorrow evening.

Have fun overpaying for a sub par shave.

Simply, no.

Today I shaved with a Schick Krona DE and a Personna blade
Yesterday I used a Wilkinson Sword Profile cartridge (NOS, Gillette Contour compatible)
The day before I used a Feather Popular with a Feather blade
Last week, I used a Gillette GII with a Personna cartridge for a few days

Bottom line, I get a good shave with all of them.

I can understand the OP's frustration I think. I felt a bit like that when I first switched from DE's to straights and couldn't get the hang of it for a long time. All I would say is that with effort and perseverance comes attainment. Throwing superior tools away because you're not able to use them yet isn't the way to improve.

I would strongly argue against the 'superior tools' and 'not able to use them' part of your post.

When cartridges were introduced men ditched their old DE razors in their millions. These men knew nothing other than DE shaving. If cartridges were 'inferior' they would never have sold, and sold to men with many, many years 'practice' with DE razors.

It's hardly rocket surgery.

This.

Particularly the bit I bolded.

I can get a perfect shave (and do, once a week) with a DE, but it's much slower and more expensive than using a cartridge.

So now I use a cartridge 6 days a week and get a perfect shave to BBS standard in around three minutes (inc face lathering). On Sunday I use my beautiful Futur
with a fresh blade and spend the extra couple of minutes required to get the same standard as with the cartridge. If I get a nick it isn't a problem because the cartridge doesn't keep starting it off again during the week.

The best think I've got from DE shaving is an appreciation of using decent soap and a brush which means that shaving is a pleasure rather than just a necessary chore. I've also had a lot of fun making my own soaps with all sorts of interesting scent combinations.

I use a Rimei and a Wilkinson Classic razor combo most days, and it takes me around three minutes to shave once software applied be it soap or gel. This is the same or about the same time it takes me with the KOS Azur.

I think a very mild DE shaver works the same as cart once you find your angle. The DE results are actually less close than the carts however there are no bumps and zits.

I guess the shave you get from cartridges is subjective. The 200%+ price increase is not. Plus cartridges give me shaving bumps whereas blades do not. Enjoy the cartridges! Better?

I like using carts sometimes, (the older, cheaper ones, not 9 blade monstrosities), I even use the plastic disposable versions. Truth be told they can be good shavers. But I also like a DE shave a few times a week, there's no hard or fast rules in shaving and you use whatever you damn well want to. Even Vinny still hangs about here and at times he's virtually insinuated that shaving in all it's forms is deeply homosexual. We love him and all his foibles though.

Sounds like DE wasn't for the OP which is fine, but it was hardly worth getting that indignant over. Especially after 4 posts.

I pay about 1 pound per cartridge for Sensors. Maybe he's using the Supermax carts from pound shops or whatever the Dutch equivalent of a pound shop is? The Supermax are very cheap carts.

I've always wanted to try those Indian single blade carts by Gillette, they look kinda interesting too, in a minimalist way.

EDIT; Way too slow!

Do you mean the new(ish) Gillette Guard, Canuck? There is a seller on eBay in the UK who has stock ... something like 99p for the razor plus one head and then another 99p for 5 replacement heads, I think. They review well. I'm certainly tempted ... in fact, I should.

I keep a stock of Bic Sensitive 1s in, what, 99p for ten? I also have some Bic Metals razors, which are nice, but expensive in comparison but give a more regular, rather than sensitive shave.
