Glycerine Soaps at Waitrose

Hi, I recently noticed these on a trip to Waitrose:
http://www.waitrose.com/shop/HeaderSearchCmd?searchTerm=glycerin+soaps&defaultSearch=None&search=

Interestingly, I haven't seen this kind of thing from any of the regular shops or supermarket stores where I am at all. To date, I haven't used any of the products myself, but they seem reasonably priced. Obviously, I guess this is not in the league of Musco, etc, but might be worth a try at this price. (The Waitrose pure glycerine soap seems to have a lot less ingredients in it than the scented ones).

For the people that use glycerin type soaps regularly as a pre-shave, does it have any affect on drying your skin out at all? I have very sensitive skin and generally I never use bar soap, because I find it too drying on my skin. I always use liquid soaps.

Thanks
Stephen

You're a bit late to that particular party, Newcomer. They used to sell a glycerin soap called "Softening Soap, which knocked Musgo into a cocked hat for effect and price. I tried a couple of those you have linked to but the scents did my sensitive skin no good at all.

Have you tried Proraso pre-shave? Damned good stuff - softens the beard and moisturises the skin a little, too. Cheaper by the big tub - 300g as I recall. I use it every day, applied in top of pre-shave oil - I have about a dozen different oils - slapped on as I step out of the shower.

Most probably, I have only been on the DE road since April!

Was it this one? http://www.waitrose.com/shop/ProductView-10317-10001-34731-Waitrose+organic+softening+glycerine+soap

I would only go for the glycerine pure soap personally, as the others seem to have a lot of ingredients, too many for my liking. (I often find this is the case, sadly. Products are sold and marketed as pure, natural, basic - until you check the ingredient list and then you find it's almost the opposite! It seems like a lot of bar soap products these days have glycerine taken out. This is sold on elsewhere as it is more profitable to manufacturers, with SLS + other chemicals added as a substitute. I've even found some toothpastes with SLS lather too easily when they come into contact with water, even in my very hard water area).

No, I haven't tried the Proraso pre-shave, but it sounds like good stuff, I'll look into it.

I thought that the soap, being soap, it might have a bigger impact that a liquid pre-shave treatment. (I did receive a small sample of Prep pre-shave from Retro Grooming with my order, but I haven't used it yet!)

Do the Proraso pre-shave, or glycerin soaps generally have any direct effect on lather? What I am curious about, is does aid keeping, or improving the lather, or make it last any longer? Or would you say it was negligible?

You're lucky. I use the proraso pre-shave and it DOES affect the lather for certain soaps (at least for me.)
I've only got a couple of weeks use left of the proraso, I probably won't buy it again.
I do use RazoRock mentholated lime preshave soap, it's a 'pure' glycerin soap and it offers lovely glide and does not affect the lather. I'm also told that the neutrogena glycerin "face bar" works as a good preshave.

Yes - that's the one. It was good stuff.

In my view, the pre-shaves are not about effecting the lather but about effecting the beard - softening it ready for shaving and do so more effectively that hot towels. They also add some slide - which I see as being beneath the lather, adhering to the skin.

Pre-shave oil and Proraro pre-shave together do not effect my lather. I have a water softener and load my brush generously using good soaps such as Nanny's Signature Shaving Soap and Xpec at the high end and Truefit and Hill creams at the other. So I have no problem at all lathering up to get a thick, slick creamy lather with which to shave. Generously loading your brush is the secret, with adequate hydration - neither over nor under hydrating as you build the lather.

You should try other soaps. High St one do the same for me. Gemstone shaving have nice soaps. Also you can use Neutrogena when available in £ shops

I use Neutogena Glycerin Bar [ Made in USA] just as effective as Musgo Real & Ach Brito.
Got a load at Family Bargains, but now available on Amazon.

Just to add, this doesn't contain SLS like pears soap does either.
