Gillette Wilkinson sword blades

What's the story with these blades? To those of us in the UK these two names dominate and are in competion with each other in the cartridge market, it seems like an unlikely partnership for them.

Anyone know?

Its a marketing thing, the blades you are referring to are made in India & China for the Asian market where Gillette has the rights to the Wilkinson sword trademark. In the Americas Wilkinson sword are sold under the Schick name.

I have been shaving with Wilkinson Sword DE blades for the last 4 years. Its hard to find a better blade IMO. I do use other blades as well that are close to W.S. though, such as Dorco Prime & Gillette Green & Yellow blades.

I've tried both the (old production) Indian-made and (new production for the Indian market) Chinese-made GWS blades. They're not the worst blades out there, but definitely not amongst my favourites and I won't be picking up any more. German-made Wilkies work better for me, although I know not everyone shares this view.

I had not used a Chinese Gillette Wilkinson Sword blade for a few months and did so today with the downright "dirty" Haymarket Vetiver by Shannon's Soaps. By dirty I mean very, very "earthy" to the point of being dark.

This blade has to be the best buy extant for the quality it exudes. Yes, it can even be bought cheaper than the Astra SP. I don't know what ancient Chinese secret Gillette is using in Shanghai but their DE blades there are simply fantastic. The only problem is finding a vendor who will determine if it is made in China or India, the latter not being quite as good IMO.

I've been using quite a few of the Indian GWS's recently and I think they are a fine blade with the right razor, not as sharp as the MIC one which is superior.

I spent a few weeks in India and both MIC & MII variants in the region I went to are ubiquitous. The MII one is the cheaper one at 20INR (£0.24) for 10 blades, whilst the MIC one is 15INR (£0.18) for 5 blades. Generally, the MII is the blade used for trade (by barbers) & the MIC one is a consumer product.

I tried three different versions (packaging) of the P&G Wilkinson blades (India), did not care for them & they were very slow to sell. The Gillette 7 o'clock Super Platinum (black) however are very good blades.
