Gillette Sensor & Any Other Suitable 2 Blade Cartridges

You're on the wrong Forum here m8! Our interest is in traditional shaving not those awful overpriced cartridge contraptions!!

You somehow have missed the fact that you're posting in the cartridge razors section of this forum. So I really think you've taken the wrong turn and ended up in the wrong place matey! Our interest here is obviously not yours.

Bought a further 4 packs of the Blue II swivel yesterday from ASDA; not bad at 25p per cartridge; now probably got approximately a year's supply - I just hope they are okay; haven't tried them out as yet!!

Although the Gillette Blue II plus Slalom is the same fixing system as the original Sensor, it is wider/longer than the Sensor's fixing system and therefore it does not fit into the Sensor handle. Obviously ridiculous, because if it were to fit none of the throwaway handles would need to be manufactured / produced and thus a great saving in throwaway plastic etc. Does anyone know if the Sensor fixing system is patented so that no one can make blades that actually fit the Sensor handle, which would seem sensible. It sort of baffles me why Gillette are effectively producing a Sensor throaway razor, which sells for a lot less than the original Sensor blades, but it would appear, absolutely refuses to manufacture Sensor cartridges, which would sell for more than the throwaways. I sort of think I know the answer, but thought it was worth mentioning, just in case!

Incidently, USRazer.com appear to do a good 2 blade cartridge that does fit the Sensor handle, but not too sure if they ship to UK, will do some more research on it and Atra would also seem to be a good 2 blade cartrige, also a USA product, I believe, but need a different handle to the Sensor.

Yes, USRazor.com do ship to the UK but it is cost prohibitive. But the 2 blade cartridges they produce for the Sensor would be worth a try and they do sell a lot of them. I am now using the Gillette Blue ll Slalom regularly. It is not as good as the Sensor with the original Sensor 2 blade cartridge but it is not bad and far better than my struggle with the DE safety razor; I am now back to shaving in approximately 90 seconds, which suits me. I use the razor with the Gillette Sensitive Gel after washing my face with Pears Soap and water and it produces a reasonably good shave, importantly with no nicks and in a short time.

I agree with you, I used to love the basic Sensor 2 Blade cartridges, up until about 4 years ago you could get 10 for £9.99 in Superdrug, but then you could only get the stupid "Excel" ones with a pointless piece of rubber on them that did nothing, for an extra £2! I refused to buy them.

Totally agree with you Rockall66; there is no cartridge to compare with the Sensor in my opinion. As I say in my last post there appears to be some good Sensor substitutes on USRazor.com, but the shipping costs make them uneconomical.

I use a Sensor Excel for trim work as the blade is fairly manuverable. Can anyone offer a comparison of the Schick Ultra and FII Neo re manuverability, quality of shave (especially the Feather as I find their DE and Artist Club blades rather wicked)?

Sensor is a great razor. I alternate between a Sensor and a Mach3 and have done so for years, yet I still can't decide which one I like better. Both give me a close, comfortable shave with no nicks, weepers or irritation. I must say, however, that what I learned in technique from using a DE for years prepared me well for using these two razors, ie proper prep., slow and steady and not too much pressure. But where I found the Sensor and Mach3 superior to my DEs was in shaving difficult spots and along my jaw line. When using a DE I would have to clean-up these spots with the Sensor/Mach3 and decided one day to abandon the DE for these two razors and I've never looked back.

I have always been a fan of the Sensor. I gave DE shaving a really good try out, but it is extremely difficult to get really under the nose area. Some people have sugested that one should use a cartridge shaver for this area, which seems a little ridiculous, because then you may as well use a cartride to carry out the whole shave. I also like to shave very quickly, which you simply cannot do with a DE. I also cannot be doing with all the paraphernalia that is needed (or desired) with the DE shaving process (ie shaving soap; shaving bowl, shaving brush; pre-shave cream etc, etc; all of which need washing down after use, c/w softening the shaving brush in warm water before using etc). Cartridge shaving is so much easier and quicker; wash face with soap and warm water; I use Gillette Sensitive Gel; Shave; rinse face with cold water; apply AS and that's it; takes me about 90 seconds; as oppossed to at least 12 minutes, plus patching up the cuts from DE shaving. I personally do not believe I get a better shave with the DE system, just a considerable amount of additional hassle. Obviously these views are merely my own opinion, based on my own experience.

If quick (and painless) is your main priority then a cartridge is probably the way to go. However, did you ever try one of the Artist Club single edge razors? One of those with a mild blade is super.

I'm with you regarding the quality of shave I get from the Sensor. Where I part company with you is on the the other aspects of shaving. In this regard, I am a ‘wet shaver': badger or boar shaving brush, Scuttle for pre-shave brush soak and for keeping the lather between passes, shaving cream and sometimes shaving soap, 2 or 3 passes with razor, warm water rinse and liberal lashings of an alcohol-based aftershave splash. Obviously, all this takes me longer than 90 seconds, but it's not as long as if I used a DE/SE razor, but I get as good a shave.

Hello Rufus, I usually find that I get a very good shave (with the Sensor) with one pass and using/applying just gillette sensitive gel by hand; each to there own. I don't mind the Mach3, but much prefer the compactness of the Sensor.

Hello Michael: I will have a look into te Artist Club single edge razor (have not heard of this before), thank you for the advice. I did however find the DE shaving system just too harsh for me personally, despite trying out different blades, soaps and creams etc. I was for ever getting cuts and personally I don't see shaving as anything other than something many of us have to do every day, along with washing our hair and cleaning our teeth and because of this I like to get my shave carried out as quickly as possible.

Hello again Michael; the artist single blade, is similar to the cut throat of old. When in India, the Barber I use shaves with similar and he gives me the very best shave; better than I can do. But India is a long way to go for a shave, even if it is only 50p once you are there. I have got an Alibaba open razor, which takes either single blades or a snapped DE blade, but I dont think that I will be using this on a regular basis.
