Gillette Guard

I've ordered one (thanks fancontroller). I'll try it out when it arrives. Part of me hopes it's not very good.
They are made in India and sold only in India. If the guy who sold it to me is importing the razor and cartridges from India. Then selling a razor with a cartridge and a pack of 6 spares post free for £3.95, and making a profit. How much does the average Indian man pay for them over there?
Is this Gillette's effort at getting the Indian subcontinent which is one of the largest remaining markets for DE razors and blades using cartridge razors. If that happens I'm not sure how long our supply of cheap DE blades will last.

I think the 'remaining' are actually the majority of shavers on the globe, not in the west obviously but globally DE still rule.

My guard arrived over the weekend. I shaved with it yesterday and this morning. The razor is the only thing I changed in my shaving method. I used bodyshop cream and brush making the lather in a bowl. It's very easy to shave with, you'd have to be doing something stupid to cut yourself. It takes about half the time that it takes with my Merkur Progress, but not as good a shave. That said it's a decent shave and would be fine if I was in a hurry, or if I was travelling with hand luggage and couldn't take razor blades.
The razor is very light however needs very little pressure to shave. I can see why someone who was after a quick safe easy shave would like it. I still remain convinced that it's the prep etc. that makes a good shave, the razor may or may not improve it.

I had a go with my old fusion the other day with much the same result. I think the main difference is in the soap and brush plus the fact that DE shaving makes me concentrate on which direction everything is growing so when I repeat the process with the fusion I get equally good results.

I agree 110%

I use my Edwin Jagger/Plisson Fusion cart razors with all the other stuff I also use, when I shave with any of my 50+ DE razors.

And get darn fine shaves out of it all the time. No burning, no tucking, no pulling, no nothing. Yes, an ingrown hair once in a while, because of the way the Fusion shaves - that's about it. Other than that, I get perfect BBS shaves, because I use a brush, a shaving soap/shaving cream, once in a while a pre shave cream and proper prep.

I'd be interested to try one, as a single edge travel razor it'd be ideal. If it's any good that is...
Having changed back to DE shaving, after much discomfort from use of Cartridge Razors,
thought i would try a "Guard ", for upper lip/nose area.

I have quite a stubborn beard. Well lathered and softened, found had to use to many passes with it,
and got no better results than with DE razor, but did feel sore, and had to apply Arko 'miracle cream' .

Will not be using this again, even if it is light. Costs in India ,estimated on packet
as 1rupee or £0.01 .

Tried the Guard for the first time, just now.

I like my DEs and I love my injector, but... I've just had my best ever shave, so far! Properly BBS.

I have a rosette and a couple of random patches that don't conform, making my beard hard work to shave decently. I shave about every second or third day, as the shave seems better with a wee bit more growth.

I used my usual routine, the only changes were using the Guard and choice of ASB. The result was a BBS shave, quick and 2 passes plus polishing.

As others have said, prep and knowing your beard growth is the key, generally. However, in my case, there is another factor: I have arthritis in my thumbs and nerve problems from some knackered vertebrae in my neck. The result is variably poor grip, wrist weakness and some tremors. In my case, I think I was better able to control the razor, as less razor technique is needed, which helped.

I'll see how things progress, in terms of longevity and consistent performance. I also have some Feather F2s to test, so let's see what happens.

So far, 10/10, for the Guard.

I keep dropping the Guard in for one or two shaves a week at the moment and really quite like it. A really nice cheap effective shave with the Guard, a boar brush and some Arko stick.

I'm taking the Gillette Guard and that razor alone on holiday. I've got Bulldog Shaving Gel to accompany (so no brush needed), a bottle of Alcolado Glacial to cool off and a big bottle of Selin Turkish Cologne to dry out, de-sweat and generally refresh. I've decanted some into a sprayer for throughout the day/evening and for emergencies if I cannot find a pub :D

That's all I have been thinking about today.. The OPs original question. After many years leaving cartridge razors behind, I got me a Fusion just to remember or remind myself how it was like. And wow!

I hate that realization!

I'm a little late to the party but tried the Guard as a travel razor. Not a bad shave at all although I wish there was a better quality handle that would fit the Guard cartridges, then I could see myself using it more frequently, especially when in a hurry.

Is it the weight? You could easily push a metal rod into it and seal up the end.

Yes, it's the weight to some extent, but it just feels flimsyy in the hand and too much like a disposable for my liking... which is more or less what it is I guess.

Tried the Guard again. Not for me, fine on face but not on upper lip or neck.

Pass it on with 5 cartridges if some one ,wants to try.

NOW GONE TO A GOOD HOME
