Gillette, any good?

20200708_171354.jpg G'day shavers. I found this round m'dad's place today. It's a Gillette but is it any good? The handle is very small. Thought I might try it out but I haven't DE shaved before and the only blades I have for it are Concord which were a freebie with some soap from I can't remember where. Is this an all round bad idea or acceptable for a DE newb?

Yes try it, you may never want to shave with another razor again! :) Gillette Tech.

I can't quite see from the angle, but given the thickness of the top cap and baseplate I think the head and handle are mis-matched. What you have there is a head from the '50s and a handle from the '60s. If it's the head that I think it is, it'll have a diamond shape under the baseplate where the handle screws up to and the long bar under the top cap will poke out at each end of the diamond.

Either way, yes ... lovely razor. Give it a scrub with a toothbrush and liquid soap, and it'll come up sparkling.

In terms of it being a good razor to start with. Yes! Think back in the day it was one of the few choices that you had, so all newcomers to shaving would have picked up something like this as their first razor. To give you the best impression, buy in a pack of known good blades. The Gillette 7 O'Clock in the green pack, for example. That'll give you a baseline to make comparisons from as I'm sure you'll like the shave.

Have fun!

Thanks guy's I'll give it a spin then... perhaps with different blades. Pjgh, you'r right about the bars pointing out of the diamond shape and now you mention it, it def needs a clean. 50's head and 60's handle interesting, I'll quiz the ole man about that.
Will post results (y)

How light is it? That might be one of the all aluminum ones. All Tech razors are good shavers.
It's pretty light, the handle is certainly light and most probably aluminium. The top part not sure, I'll get a better idea when I clean it up. Still a little nervous about using it. Even though I've shaved with straights for years I have to respect the difference in technique... and my lack of with DE.

It is quite a mild razor, you have no need to worry about using it, stick a decent blade in it and give it a go, if you can shave with a straight a DE razor shouldn't hold any fear in you! :) just go nice and slow and use no pressure on the razor and bobs your brother! P.
