Fountain Pens

I picked up some Quink in black yesterday from my local stationers and it's rather a watery black.

That said, it has allowed me to try out the pump-full pens with mixed results. The Hero and two Wing Sungs are all ultra fine (think architect fineliner) with the Hero being nice and smooth with an even line, the Wing Sung 234 likewise but even finer and the Wing Sung 380 is a scratchy little beast. I think the tines might be mis-aligned, as when i write in a certain direction then pen actually scratches the top layer off the paper

Won another Parker 45 off the bay yesterday, flighter model which looks to have a 14ct nib for £7 along with a Queensway clone of a 45 for £3. Hopefully I'll have more luck with those!

Here's the Queensway:

As you can see the clip is bent enough to be almost useless, but that has little impact when the pen will mostly be on a desk. it writes wonderfully for a cheap nib with an incredibly wet line and an almost italic look to it. The nib is definitely on the broader side.

The 45 Flighter is due today, I'm very excited....

Update: Wife has nicked the Hero.... and she has her eye on the new 45 too

Cor - thanks for those links! No. 2 from the left in my pic is another Baoer, and I concur with you about the build quality: remarkably heavy, metal threads and very nicely turned out all round.

What I little realised when you lot got me going on pens was the huge, agonising choice of ink. It will take me a long time to make up my mind, poring over the Diamine swatches at The Writing Desk, but in the meantime I'm hoping to find a bottle of Waterman blue / black locally. I never did like Quink.

I use Diamine inks (Sapphire Blue and Onyx Black) in my pens, but have to admit my favourite ink is Pelikan Brilliant Brown. If you have no joy in getting your Waterman ink PM me and when I next go into town (for town read West End, London...  ) I will go to the shop I use in Burlington Arcade, they just sell high end fountain pens and most inks. Like you I don't touch Quink ink not keen on the way it looks and flows........

When I acquire, or in this case reacquire, an interest in a subject, I tend to read up on it obsessively. This isn't necessarily a good thing, and with the internet delivering a gigashedload of information on any given subject in nanoseconds, there's plenty of scope for driving yourself crazy. The whole hifi business drove me to distraction for months on end. Fountain pen inks aren't nearly as bad, but when I come across something like this, it doesn't help much with the business of just buying a bottle of ink and getting on with my life. The Diamine section is fascinating, I'm afraid.

Anyway Neo, I don't suppose there is much difference, so be happy! For all I know, Quink may have been reformulated half a dozen times since I last used it, but "watery black" does ring a bell. Pleased to hear that your wife has half inched your Hero, because so has mine  The upside of that is that she's found a local supplier of Waterman ink and is stumping up for the first bottle, so thanks for the kind offer, missingskin, but my personal shopper has come up trumps once again.

No problem, you should try the Diamine inks though they are very good and have a nice range of colours and you can get small bottles. So not too expensive.

After a run round Kempton this morning I picked up a couple more bits (Sunbury beat me to a few!) including another Parker 45 and an Osmiroid 75 piston filler!

Here's a quick guide I put together on FPN for Parker 45 owners:

+1

I have Imperial Purple in my Safari at work.

I have the Diamine Classic Red in a white Safari and the Pumpkin in an orange Safari LE. They're nice inks, good flow, relatively easy to get.

The most difficulties I've had with Noodlers ink, mainly flow-wise.
Private Reserve (U.S. made) is one of my favorites (American Blue and Spearmint, while Naples Blue is so-so).
Lamy ink is fine, especially if you have a Lamy pen.

Herbin ink has excellent flow and offers beautiful colours.

Ebay gamble of the day......

Won this lot on Sunday:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230519812720&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_526wt_1137" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 526wt_1137</a><!-- m -->

Taking a punt based on there being at least one nice pen in the lot. Any ebay seller who puts up listings with photos like that is bound to be taking the piss, but there looks to be parker in the pile and who knows, maybe a hidden gem
