Fountain Pens

After a quick tour of kempton this morning (no razors, sunburyboy must have got there first!) I picked up a vintage Parker - not sure which one it is, but it has a semi hooded gold nib and a pump type filler. Will post some pics later, just need to pick up some ink!

Is there anything I should do/know before i try filling for the first time? The pump is a metal tube with a section that presses in, marked 'made in usa'.

If its got a rubber sac/bulb, just make sure that it hasn't perished. I always run some slightly warm water through them to check and to clean the nib out.
regards, beejay

Have you lot no shame whatsoever ? I now have some 4 or 5 razors, which is about 3 more than I had before I came to this forum. I hold each & every one of you responsible for the Mergress, the Muhle 89 the extra 2 Mama Bear soaps I'm awaiting from Badger & Hone ; and now Michael has let me have an Ever Ready SE so there's another 100 blades ordered ! I shall soon need another Tupperware shaving box to hide. So, no more Fountain pen chat plse ............ that could become my next obsession .

did you happen to pay £5.00 for it, you offered £3.00 but he wouldn't take it ? (you bought off a foreign chap right in front of the Grandstand?)
if that was you then i was right behind you !!!)

there were razors there, a schick injector in the enclosed bit when you first go in, two valet razors also inside, a gillette new inside a grooming kit, and an aristocrat inside a display case but the seller wanted £45 for it ! :(

im stalking you !!

Now that is scary!

For those of you who have never been to Kempton, it's freaking huge, open for hours and the chances of even finding the person your with if you get separated is near impossible!!

I saw the injector and valets - also a load of straights kicking about but nothing worth a punt. And now Sunbury knows what I look like.... :?

i was hoping you would of put the pen back...............I WANTED TO CHECK IT OUT !!! i did get one in the end, a Parker Duofold Aero-metric in Blue from one of the Ladies inside.

I think kempton is overpriced for the stuff we look for, if you ask if there are any razors they will add on a tenner before they even reply, car boots are much better....go to the one in Shepperton on saturday near the Studios, i have got loads of stuff there.

Steve

Must be the only time I've beaten you to a bargain eh?!

I went to the shepperton car boot a few times last year to no avail, might have to give it another go!

According to a number of rather detailed pen sites, it's a Parker 45 CT. Glad we got that one sorted out.

Still no ink though...

if you go into Ashford head towards the station, across from Burger Junction there is an Art supply shop, he has Parker Quink in there.......

About a 3 minute walk from my house you mean? ;)

I just tried it with a Parker cartridge and it seems to fit fine - is that a viable alternative to bottled in?

Also, as you were interested in nabbing it too - thought you'd like to know it writes beautifully

The beauty with having the piston filler (or whatever your fp uses) is that you can use different brands and colours of bottled ink.
There are a few ink manufacturers that produce really nice inks (in flow, quality and colours), but again it depends on the particular pen and nib as well.

The advantage with using a ready made cartridge is convenience of changing cartridges when one has run out, the ability to take the pen with you when travelling, etc.
But you are have to put up with the Parker or Lamy or whatever inks if you choose this option for your pen, and some people find this limiting.

Overall these easily available inks are doing a pretty good job.

Oh come on - you grabbed yourself a nice Harlequin!

i grabbed both those pens for £7.00 fronm a Car Boot i go to in Guilford every sunday.....so yeah i can't complain
i'm only messing with ya mate, fair play to you, you got a nice pen for a good price, enjoy it matey.

i'm gonna keep the two i got on sunday, got them both working , very nice two, i think i will be on the lookout for pens
as i really like some of the designs on the Parkers from the Fifties & Sixties.

I guess I'll just wait the resurgence of the Quill Damian , these modern breakthroughs are indeedly too complex for such non digital oldies such as I. As for you Sunster ................. you nearly provoked me into one of my senior moments at the thought of expanding my profligate ways into pens as well as shaving.

JohnnyO. (Still game though).
