Following on from an earlier post which has been brilliantly answered and very helpful, I'm thinking of purchasing another pen and would appreciate folks thoughts on what they would buy these days with a budget of £200-250?

Where to start? Personally, I think firstly of nib choice and pen size. Then colour and other aspects of design and appearance kick in. Metal or plastics?

Speaking very generally, with that budget, the Japanese pens (Pilot, Platinum etc.) are great value, as are German Pelikans. You might consider spending or splitting your budget on perhaps two pens. Have a look at The Writing Desk and Cult Pens websites, and there are of course several other excellent UK dealers.

Thanks for starting a "long piece of string" thread (string?).

I collect and use vintage and modern fountain pens. Of all my modern pens I like Pelikan the best. Pelikan makes a full range of pens in terms of size, materials and price. I particularly like the M600, but I also have an 800, 400, 200 and repro. 100N. I like their piston filling systems not being a fan of cartridge/converters. Pelikans are robust, reliable, well designed and great writers; in that latter regard, their nibs write on the wide-side.

Also another thing to keep in mind - the nib !
There are many excellent made pens around, vintage and modern, but the nib quality varies greatly.
Try to get one that has a 14K gold nib ( not plated ) minimum, you will not regret it !
I have many various pens, Marie Todd, Sheaffer, Pilot,Platinum, Waterman, Sailor but my current favourite is a modern pen - a Lamy Studio with a lovely gold nib !

Based on no knowledge of your taste in pens I would suggest the Pelikan M605. I prefer the 805 but it's outside your budget. Go a nib size down from usual as they run broad.

Alternatively the Lamy 2000 is an understated classic.
