Only been into DE Shaving for a few months, have been using A Super Speed and getting good shaves with Derby blades, a few days ago i received my 3rd Fatboy, and as this one had some wear to the head i decided to use it rather than add to my collection...

I put in a "Swede" set the Fatboy to 3, using Palmolive Cream, tried it out :shave ...ok but not great, changed to 5 and all i can say is..................wow :D :D , really really nice smooth shave and very comfortable.

I think this will be my regular razor from now on...........soooooo nice :D

I'm tempted to try a Gillette adjustable.

The Superspeed I tried (now my girlfriend's!) was way too mild for me and I had to do 4-5 passes and still had to finish my shave with my trusty HD.

I wonder which settings on the various adjustables equate with a Merkur HD? It seems to be the perfect aggressiveness for me, and I can get BBS in three passes with minor touch ups.

At the risk of getting flamed...

I don't enjoy using my Fatboy that much. It gives a decent enough shave but I find the head too large and struggle to do under the nose. I read the other thread a while back about using a Feather in a Fatboy and have been using that combination all week. It is better and gives a nice clean shave, but it was not a bad shave before it is just the head that I struggle to manipulate and maintain the right angle.

Maybe a few more blades and I will get used to it, going to give it a fair crack before I declare myself incompetent.

No flames from over here. That's a valid criticism of the Fatboy and I don't think you're the first to make it. For manoeuvrability a Tech beats it hands down, but on the other hand the extra heft of the FB seems to work especially well under the chin.

If you find the Fattie's head is too big try a Slim -- the head is shallower (as per later models of SuperSpeed) and so get under the nose easier.

I have to say this thread sent me back to my Fatboy and I was pleasantly surprised at the shaves.

The thing with all adjustables is to find one where the blade are straight (parallel to the safety bar) and even (equal on both sides); most have some discrepancy on one or both of these.

Otherwise: enjoy!

I think the head size of the FB is criticized rather unfairly, the additional heft of this razor makes it "feel" more awkward but actually
if you compare head profiles with other favorite TTO razors like the Rockets and Flair tips for instance there is very little if anything in it.
Check it for yourself other than the Slim and Super my other TTO's are very similar if not the same.

I did a comparison last night you are right antdad, the head of the Slim is pratically identical to the Fatboy and noting in it compared to a Rocket and other Gillettes.

None the less I used the Slim today and with the same formula I definately got a better shave. Given Rev's comment I wonder if I do have a wonky Fatboy. I must put a blade in both and have a close look to see if there is any bend of the guard of the Fatboy.

I think the unevenness among adjustables is down to the four "platforms" that raise and lower the blade; if they are not identical them neither will the blade be.

(The four mini platforms that rise and fall are, of course, just extensions of a single piece of metal.)

You can also micro adjust the aggressiveness of the razor by depressing the red ratchet tab and then moving the adjustment dial a few levels, set to 5 and move it one way or the other.

I had two FB's that had different blade gaps for the same setting so I adjusted one to match the other I liked, seemed to work.

Can't say I'm tempted to 'over-clock' my Fatboys, I tend to leave mine around 5 and dial one up or down depending on blade type and age.
The Fatboy was my favourite both design and shave wise but I'm getting better (closer, less aggressive) shaves from the new long-handled
Progress.

I also have a Slim Adjustable and short-handled Progress and based I'd rate and use them as follows:
- Long Handled Progress (set to 2)
- Fatboy (set to 5)
- Progress (set to 3)
-Slim Adjustable (set to 7)

I like the weight and balance of the Fatboy compared to the Slim.
