Film and stones

Hey all,

I believed my razor to be in fairly good shape but just a bit beyond paste to bring it back to life so I bought a 12k Naniwa in the hopes of getting the edge keen again but didn't really get the result.
After trawling through google I decided I should probably check my bevel. I used the sharpie trick and after a few laps of the 12k I still had some ink on there.

This is my first straight razor after moving from a shavette and I'm actually now doubting the “shave ready” claim from the vendor (after seeing a few posts from others on here who have had issues with them) but haven't got a fair comparison to make.
A few questions if I may -

How many laps on the 12k is fair to remove that ink? I don't want to fix it if it ain't broken.

If the bevel is not set I will get a 1k Naniwa stone to reset, can I then use lapping film up to the point of the 12k Naniwa I've just lumped out for and if so which grades should I be using?

Sorry for the lengthy post and thanks in advance

Don't quote me on this 12000 is a polishing grit. The last of the progression from bevel setting. If you go on the straight razor part of the forum, there is loads of information. 1000, 3000,5000, 12000 should be OK. I'm going to call @ fergiebilly

Thanks Jimmy,
I wasn't expecting to reset the bevel, I thought it might have just needed refreshing on the 12k, when this didn't work I started to think something more needed doing and my suspicions are correct, the bevel is out, I'm not convinced it was right in the first place (was always a bit rough). Maybe I just messed it up with poor stropping when I first started out or it wasn't as “shave ready” as stated. Either way I ordered 1, 5 & 8k set of naniwa stones and will have a go at a full hone. Wish me luck.

One thing you missed you didn't say if the vendor who sold you the razor used tape? if he did and you didn't well there's the problem and the reason there is still ink from the sharpie on your bevel, now re-tape the spine and your 12K will wipe out the sharpie and restore the edge.
the weird thing is that one side almost cleared and the other side hardly touched the ink at all. I think it might be beyond the help of a finishing stone now?

To Answer the Lapping Film Question...Yes You Can Set a Bevel with Lapping Film....15 Micron for Setting the Bevel,,,,12 Micron, 9 Micron, 5 Micron, 3 Micron, 1 Micron....3 Micron = 12 K & 1 Micron = 16 K.... :p
As Jamie Said...You Never Mentioned the Vendor...A Lot are Sold as Shave Ready & Not Bevel Set Properly...(y)

Thanks for the info @Fergiebilly I ended up buying a set of stones (was going to happen sooner or later) I got naniwa 1,5 & 8k to go with the 12k. I'll have a go at a full progression hone and see how I get on (it looks easy on YouTube :p).

I didn't want to mention the vendor because this is my first proper SR after a shavette and there is a good chance I've done something whilst getting the hang of stropping etc...

I'll check in with my hone results

That Progression is Sound...Most of the Work is On the 1 K Bevel Hone...The Blade Should Shave Arm Hair from the 1 K Stone...Good Luck with Youre Honing Endeavors... (y)

So my first honing endeavour went fairly well I think but a little advice if you could -

I spent a fair amount of time on the 1k until the bevel looked fairly even and could shave arm hair, so I think I've set the bevel.

my question are these -
what should I be looking for on the following stones? i.e when I do I need to move to the next one?
I have 5,8 and 12k naniwas after the 1k.

I managed a shave after going through the whole progression but nowhere near as comfy as I would like.

also a quick thing about lapping the stones - I used a glass chopping board and some p320 wet/dry, pencilled on a grid a rubbed until gone, to what extent do these need to be flat? if it was a gnats cock out is that gonna cause some major problems?

Once the Pencilled Grid is Gone the Stone Should be Flat...Thats Youre Landmark...Experience Tells Ya when to Move On...95 % of the Work is on the 1 K Bevel Hone...Once the Bevel is SET & it Can Shave Hair then Move on to the 5 K...Its a Bit of a Jump from the 1 K to 5 K So Ensure You Do an Extra Bit of Work on the 5 K... I Dont Know what Stones You are Using...The Best Naniwa Stones are the SUPER & PROFESSIONAL Stones..

Honing Razors Takes a Bit of Learning...Its Always Tempting to Move on Too Quickly before the Bevel is Properly Set...Or Move on Too Quickly in General...The Learning is in the Practice & Practice Makes Perfect...Glen here Shows a Naniwa Progression...He Speaks about Pressure & Stuff Rarely Mentioned...

Thanks Billy,

I'm using Naniwa super stones... I think I need to stop thinking about numbers and start trying to develop a fee for it.

last thing or 2 I'm going to ask then I'll just put on my big boy pants and get on with it :D
tape or no tape on the spine? I've not been using any but do you find you get a better edge when you use it or makes no difference?

lastly, will I do the razor any damage by going back to the 1k and starting again? Or would I need to be doing this a lot?

thanks again for all the help with which I'm sure are very tedious questions, I just find there seems to be a ton of conflicting info out there and I never know which advice is good

Taking the Razor Back to the 1 K Stone is Fine...Using Tape or No Tape is a Personal Choice...When Learning I Would Defo Suggest Using Tape or You Will Get Hone Wear on the Spine...I Never Hone a Razor without Tape Unless Asked...Which is Rare.. (y)

Thanks again for all the help and advice, found that video really helpful. Took it back to the 1k and spent a bit of time on the 5k before finishing the progression. It's by far the best it's ever been! I didn't count laps or do any circles etc... just got the x strokes down and started getting a feel for it. :D
