Feathers

Hi. My first post.
Had a Fatboy for a few months. Tried sample blades after getting used to shaver. The only blade that doesnt pull is Feathers. I can shave my cheeks with any blade, its when I want to go against the grain on my neck.
Where is the best plce to buy bulk Feathers. Or is there another blade I should try before buying a load of Feathers.
Got my sample pack from Connaught

Yep...I can't really go ATG with much else either. The above retailer is I think the cheapest around for Feathers last time I looked.
Super Iridiums are also favorites, a touch less sharp but a bit smoother according to some but Feathers are excellent in a Fatboy, one of my favorite combinations.

tonights shave was only the 2nd time i've used a feather blade (2nd shave with same blade) and while the 1st time went well this time it was awful, felt like i'd used it for 5 shaves not one.

initial reaction not good

anyone else not find feathers to there liking?

Yup, I only have a light beard so they are a bit more than I need. I find them unforgiving in an aggressive razor, and often nick myself.

I'd rather use a Derby than a Feather but I like Kais best of all.

I had a patch a while back when I thought they were actually rubbish. Then I tried again and found them to be rather good. Maybe I have just been unlucky (or lucky?) or there may have been other factors at play. Anyway, I have a few packets and still intend to use them, but I don't think I'll order them again.

I first tried feathers in my Merkur Futur in July 2008 (I only returned to DE shaving in June 2008 after ~20 years of other shaving methods).
I was only brave enough to try a feather again this week -and loved it!
Now I wish I'd ordered a shed load of these as well as my shed load of:
Super iridiums
Yellow, green and black 7 O'Clocks
Sharps (They work for me)
Sharks
Gillette Super thins
Bluebirds

....and god knows what else I've got hidden away

One day I'll sit down and work out how many years of blades I've got left.

Attached is my 3rd refinement of an Excel Shavocalypse calculator - takes account of your own blade consumption rate in column C and provides the projected Shavocalypse date based on your input.

Back to the Feather plot - no issues here with Feathers - I have about 160 around - I just have other blades I prefer.

Thanks for that HM, the spreadsheet works just fine with Open Office Calc by the way.

I get on well with Feathers, but when they die they do so suddenly, it seems to me. Also, not a blade for a very aggressive razor.

Dredge, I've started using Feathers in my Merkur HD; intially with some trepidation, may I add. For me they've been magic thus far (touch wood), and have cut considerably closer than the Derbys and unmarked blades I started with. Like you, I strive for a decent shave under the jawline. Not sure if it was a fluke, but I went ATG on my neck area the other night brilliantly. And no burn! So close, in fact, I skipped yesterday's shave altogether.

Not for me last time they went for a walk - too harsh. Sharp but took the top off my skin as well. Having said that, I'm intrigued enought to have another go. Derby's doing the stuff at the moment.

Aaahh the dreaded Samurai..

I jumped straight onto these once i moved on from my Boots DE (highly recommend).

The reason for my complete lack of self preservation was the following.

1. Fear of instant decapitation.

2. Fear of instant decapitation.

3. Fear of instant decapitation.

This made me focus tottaly on my technique. And as such i get a great shave with these blades.

I believe that decapitation with a Feather blade is actually somewhat rare. Use one in the wrong razor with a heavyhanded technique (or the DTs), though, and you'll end up with a face like a welder's bench, right enough.

In addition to their capacity to cut through stone if too heavy handed, I think there is also an issue to do with skin sensitivy, which renders the Feather unsuitable, irrespective of technique.

My experience is that there's definitely some truth in that. I use them to give myself a treat every now and then rather than continuously. I have a mate who won't use anything else, but I can't get away with that.
