Favroite Razor

Ok but there no way the quality can be any where near as good, is there any blade hang would like to try it but don't know where to buy a good one
Why not?
Anyone can make a 3D model of a razor, then tell a machine to make it for them. Polish and sell.
That's how "modern" razors are made. Done it myself. Sort of.
But nobody today has the skills to make another GEM Micromatic - now that's a quality razor. Elegant, brilliant design, yet built like a tank.
Even if I put the bar lower and ask for a modern 1912 - nobody has the skills. Nobody.

100% true! (y)

The biggest variable is the blades on DE razors. With built in tolerances, and the inevitable differences between brands and even batches of the same brand, the blades never sit exactly the same way twice in the razor. All the "precision" and newness in modern razors don't mean squat in the real world of shaving. What is needed is a design that holds the blade solidly, so that there is no chatter or movement of the blade, and a razor head that presents the blade to the skin at the proper angle. The Gillette OLD does that, and the only way a newly manufactured razor can do that as well is if it is a copy of the original Gillette OLD. The farther away from that design a razor gets, the less effective and efficient it becomes.

It's also the worlds first TTO razor. ;)

Only one razor - say it ain't so? Above - ones I shan't get rid off - all genius in their own way - top to bottom -

ATT Calypso SE, ER 1912, Cobra, Mergress, Schick O type clone, Micromatic brass, Schick I type, Merkur 37c, Slim Aristocrat and Colonial General - forget the Feather Artist Club straight - couldn't get on with that - there might be quicker ways to carve yourself up a treat - but not many - traded it for this - my beloved Streamline -

Sotd-15:6:19.jpg

I've never felt the desire to go really top end on a razor - very pretty things but - as someone said previously - you cannot buy a good shave - okay - you pay two or three hundred quid to join a waiting list - until - months later - some artisan dude condescends to make you one - with materials salvaged from the space shuttle - bend over - assume the position - here are the import duties - like it wasn't expensive enough? Oh - we had quality control issues with the first run - you'll need to send it back - raped again by the Post Office and HMRC. None of which answers the original question - one razor? It would be a Rockwell 6c - humble - I know - doubly not answering the original question - but heh - I've got a lot of time on my hands at the moment. Yours - I.

Did the old type evolve over time Toby ? , are they all a little different or in your opinion did they nail it the first version they made ? Also are all Old Types open comb ?

Well put and a fine collection you have there Iain!

It's an interesting thread however all you end up with is a list of other people's favourite razors, it is rarther like asking what's your favourite blade or your favourite soap, everyone will give what they perceive to be their favourite, it dosent make every other persons answer invalid, we all like different things for different reasons.
There are very good new razors and also very good old razors and it dosent matter which side of the fence you stand on as long as you enjoy what you use.
The cost of a razor can often have no bearing on how good it will shave, it may shave very well indeed for one person but not for another.
This shaving lark is very subjective and I don't think anything can be gained by such a question, the main thing is that we enjoy what we enjoy for what ever reason.
Just shave and be happy :) P.

There are some great photos of members favourites,
I was just hoping the Original Op could post some photos of his wonderful collection also, unless there's a reason we cannot see these wonderful razors lined up?
Maybe also a SOTD today with one of them and a High End Brush?
That would be a wonderful photo
Thanks in advance

There's no point in claiming that there [is]‘...no way...' something can't be of higher quality if you haven't tried it. You've been given plenty of information sources and you know that they're available in online markets. Furthermore, if quality was an issue then they wouldn't be sought after in online markets.

The blade

The OLD type generally refers to the Double Ring, Single Ring, Ball End, and ABC.

Somewhere around late '20 or '21 they began using a thicker top cap and baseplate, some sources refer to them as '21~'28, some say '21~'29, on the forums most just say '20's OLD type.

The ABC razors had unusual baseplates at first, with the gullets between the teeth having rounded bottoms, at some point they became the same as the Ball End baseplate.

There were some special razors like the Bulldog, Big Fellow, Gorham sets sterling silver and "solid" gold, and a bunch of different handles like the Milady Decolletee, bell tube, four piece razors with a take apart handle, and more.

But the average razor that you are likely to find on ebay and elsewhere will most likely be the thick cap '21~'28, they made them by the millions, and they are probably the best shavers of them all, but I like the thin caps too.

They are all OC razors, and they were machined, not stamped.
