Favourite Blades

One cannot discuss blades in isolation.
I don't know, I'd be confident to say that blades like red IPs, Iridiums and 7 o'clocks are a pretty safe bet in any razor: consistent, sharp enough, unlikely to give one any nasty surprises. The tricky ones are things like Derbys which divide people, and at the other end of the spectrum Feathers, which really are razor and skin type dependent, although there's a definite consensus about their properties. I'd be happy to recommend the Personnas to anyone, beginner or experienced regardless of skin sensitivity, because they invariably pass all the important tests: sharp but not scary, smooth, forgiving of technique, readily available, cheap.

The only problem I've had with Derby is lack of sharpness. They worked quite well for me in the 'aggressive' razors I tried. For me Feathers are only useable in a really forgiving razor like a Rocket or Superspeed. I find Iridium very sharp - and will not dare to try it in my Gillette Single ring open comb. But I have a fairly sensitive skin.

Very happy with red personna in any of my razors.

Of all the blades I own; Red Personnas are the best blade (for the money) by far.

Feathers, Iridium, 7 O'Clock (yellow), UK Wilkinson, German Wilkinson and Indian Wilkinsons are also in my stockpile and could happily shave with any.

Some discontinued blades that were as good as the above were; Polsilver, Nacet (in the purple box), Gillette Silver Blue and Gillette Platinum (Swede).

The Silver Blue would last me at least 15 3-pass shaves!

Have to agree with Vinny, for low price quality the Red Personnas are easy to live with.

I’m only just starting my stockpile in anticipation for the shavocalypse, so I ordered 240 S/Iridium’s from paul, which will soon be followed by the Yellow 7’S , Feathers, and Red Personnas.

And then order some more sample packs just to make sure.
