Favourite Blades

Looking through these threads several DE blades get a favourable mention but many well known names have detractors.

No negative comments have been made about Feathers.

As a newbie here it would be really helpful to know which really are the favourite blades of the forum members.

I have only tried a few Merkurs and then switched to Derby blades. I have been quite happy with these but have just ordered some Feathers having seen the comments here.

Feather blades are awesome, although I have not tried shaving with these for a long period of time, just the normal 3 uses and of to another brand, ive heard some people say they can hurt the face with long term usage. But for anyone like me who has wire for stuble they are great. I dont get along with derbys they pull to much for me, i have not even tried my murkur as people say they are pants, tonight i shall be trying my Israeli personnas for the first time.

These are what I have in my Shavocalypse bunker: Astra Superior Platinum, Bluebird / Derby, Feather, Gillette Platinum, Red IP, Shark, UK Wilkinsons

Rather than me tell you why each one is there - a better bet in my mind would be to get a sampler pack from Paul and try them for yourself. At the end of the day - all our faces are different, we all shave differently, so we all end up with a different blade preference.

I will say that in arriving at that list I've had some incredibly rough shaves - and to make sure it wasn't a one-off bad blade I've persisted with some blades against my better judgement... so get ready for some pain too

Feathers are clearly a superior blade, but I find them a bit much first time around in the Aristocrat Jr. which is on the "aggressive" side. Otherwise, Red IPs and Wilkinsons suit me (although Hunnymonster has me thoroughly confused about the various types of the latter); I also reckon the Asda Personnas are pretty good, especially at the price. I recently got a popular selection pack from Paul, and it's surprising how much variation there is.

It's simple really...

there used to be a WS factory in Cramlington, Northumberland - the UK factory - it closed in 2000 - it made "UK Wilks" (they're still out there, new old stock)
production in Europe was rationalised to Solingen, Germany (German Wilks), in the Americas it's in Brazil and there are also Indian made out there. Those are the familiar white pack ones.

On top of that there are Wilkinson Economie - no idea where they're made though....

So, given that I've chucked out the packaging long since, is there a way to identify what I've got?
[30 seconds later] right, clearly what I've got is early onset Alzheimers: they've got MADE IN ENGLAND printed on the blades in big letters: solved. Thanks HM.

For the most part if they were acquired in the UK/Europe in a mainstream (read non-discount/non-specialist) shop then they will be either UK NOS or German - as you've discovered, some of the UK ones have "made in England" on them... others you have to judge by the insert in the blade box with the position and colour of the "5"

The one with the 5 on top are the UK Wilkinsons, the 5 beneath are the Germans.

How time flies! I've been busy since I started this thread. I have pretty well settled into using just one DE razor: The Jagger DE 87. The blade with which this works best for me is the red personna, closely followed by the Gillette Super Thins - a little sharper for me. I have just added the Crystal Platinum (Super+ Platinum IPs) to my rotation. So at present these are my favourite blades. When I'm tempted to use other razors - Merkur 38C, Superspeed and Gillette Single Ring I will consider Feathers, Iridium Super and Derby - depending on the razor. One cannot discuss blades in isolation. It depends so much on the razor it's to be used with. And our skin type.
