With the release of the latest Essence of Scotland shaving soap the special edition Berry Fields O' Blair and as a way of introduction or re-introduction for that matter, here we profile the complete Essence of Scotland range.

Berry Fields O' Blair -

This special edition traditional shaving soap forms part of our ever popular Essence of Scotland range but has a completely different shaving soap formula from the other soaps in the range, (which will remain the same). Many of a certain age will remember 'The Berries' with fondness as it formed part of the school summer holidays for thousands of Scots, often travelling on the 'Berry Bus' to the fields of Blairgowrie to harvest (pick) the soft fruit grown there. Traditional singer and song writer Belle Stewart's fantastic song 'The Berry Fields O' Blair' written in 1947 tells us more of the "comedy and tragedy played on the fields o' Blair". TGGR Essence of Scotland Berry Fields O' Blair special edition traditional shaving soap is a tribute to 'the berries', Belle's song, to a time, place and of course to the people. Berry Fields O' Blair shaving soap notes in full are as follows - Plum, Strawberry, Raspberry, Blackberry, Peach, Apricot, Blackcurrant, Lime, Apple Galbanum and Vetiver.

Soap ingredients - Potassium Stearate, Aqua, Sodium Cocoate, Sodium Cocoa Butterate, Glycerine, Garcinia Indica (Kokum) , Seed Butter, Sodium Avocadate, Parfum, White Kaolin, Allantoin.

Sweet Gale -

The Gentleman's Groom Room own range Essence Of Scotland Sweet Gale traditional shaving soap is enriched and fragranced with Bog Myrtle, Natural Honey, Mixed Spices, Cedarwood, Beeswax and Aberfeldy Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

The prominent note in this shaving soap is from the Bog Myrtle, also called Sweet Gale which has beautifully fragrant leaves. This native herb has anti-ageing properties, may help to control acne bacteria, has healing properties that can help with minor nicks and cuts and is suitable for sensitive skin. We launched this shaving soap in 2010 as we felt that the use and benefits of Bog Myrtle were often overlooked.

When it came to adding a 'nip' of whisky to our shaving soap it was essential it be a malt. Malt whisky is a different cratur from the blended scotch. Worthy of appreciation, malt is not to be rushed, it rewards consideration. We believe the same is true of the shaving experience.

For best results when lathering put a small amount of hot water onto the surface of the soap for a few seconds, then discard. Starting with a damp brush rather than a wet brush, lather the soap straight from container using circular motions on the surface of the soap, add a little more water to the tips of your shaving brush as required, continuing with circular motions to build your lather till the soap begins to form peaks. Face lather using painting motions with your brush.

The Essence of Scotland range sport a uniquely designed bespoke plaid for each of the soap fragrance labels.
Scottish Heather -

Launched in 2010 Essence of Scotland Scottish Heather shaving soap is enriched and fragranced with Heather, Natural Honey, Mixed Spices, Sweet Orange, Beeswax and Patchouli.

Heather is one of Scotland's most prolific and abundant plants, with a delicate floral aromatic scent that ties in well with another ingredient used in our Scottish Heather shaving soap, Scottish Honey as many Scots beekeepers will take their hives up to the moors when the Heather is in bloom.

People are rediscovering the benefits of Scottish Honey and this wonderful natural ingredient you will find in all our Essence of Scotland range of shaving soaps (with the exception of Berry Fields O' Blair Special Edition soap) as honey offers incredible antiseptic, antioxidant and cleansing properties. Honey is an anti-irritant and is suitable for sensitive skin, a great asset in a shave soap. Also honey when used together with cinnamon spice, as it is in our range of shaving soaps is known to help with minor skin infections and spots.

Mountain Yew -

Our Juniper or 'Mountain Yew' (as it is also known as in Scotland) traditional shaving soap, is a fantastic blend of Juniper, Cajeput, Mixed Spices, Natural Honey, Cypress and Fir. 50p from every sale of our Mountain Yew Traditional Shaving Soap will go directly towards the regeneration and restoration of the Caledonian Forrest in the Highlands of Scotland and the uniquely designed bespoke plaid for this label also proudly displays the Scottish conservation charity's logo.

We are extremely proud to be a Scottish Business with firm Scottish roots and as such teamed up with Trees For Life at the launch our Mountain Yew Traditional Shaving Soap. Trees For Life are a Scottish conservation charity dedicated to the regeneration and restoration of the Caledonian Forest. The Gentleman's Groom Room have a corporate grove of trees with the charity in the Highlands of Scotland and 50p from every purchase of our Mountain Yew Shaving Soap goes directly towards the addition of more trees to our grove.

Malt 'n' Myrtle -

Our own range Essence Of Scotland traditional shaving soap Malt 'n' Myrtle is enriched and fragranced with Bog Myrtle, Natural Honey, Mixed Spices, Rosemary, Beeswax and Aberfeldy Single Malt Scotch Whisky. A variation of our best selling Sweet Gale shaving soap, Malt 'n' Myrtle follows the same recipe, only Rosemary replaces the Cedarwood of the Sweet Gale soap. The uplifting fragrant notes of Rosemary blend in perfectly with Bog Myrtle, Natural Honey and Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Once only in production from the 1st of November to 1st of December each year as a Ltd edition soap, as of June 2019 due to customer demand Malt 'n' Myrtle is now in full production and available all year round.

This fragrance blend was first formulated in 2010 along with our Sweet Gale shaving soap as we felt that the use and benefits of Bog Myrtle were often overlooked.

When it came to adding a 'nip' of whisky to our shaving soap it was essential it be a malt. Malt whisky is a different cratur from the blended scotch. Worthy of appreciation, malt is not to be rushed, it rewards consideration. We believe the same is true of the shaving experience.

Highland Bothy -

Essence of Scotland traditional shaving soap Highland Bothy is handmade in Scotland in small batches. The fragrance captures the scent of a welcoming Highland Bothy's peat open fire. Earthy, Smoky, Woody with a faint aroma of Single Malt Scotch Whisky perfectly describes this Essence of Scotland fragrance. Enriched and enhanced with Vetiver, Cedarwood, Mixed Spices, Natural Honey, Beeswax and Aberfeldy Single Malt Whisky, a totally unique shaving soap scent! The distinct scent of a roaring peat open fire has been loved by many a Scot over the years.

"What tongue does your auld bookie speak?" He'll spier; an' I, his mou to steik: "No bein' fit to write in Greek, I write in Lallan, Dear to my heart as the peat reek, Auld as Tantallon.

Robert Louis Stevenson in "The Maker to Posterity"

@Dave-the-rave Whisky is far down on the ingredients list so its not overly noticeable to my nose. The prominent notes to my nose in the 3 Essence of Scotland soaps that contain whisky are Bog Myrtle in the Malt n Myrtle and Sweet Gale and Vetiver/Cedarwood in the Highland Bothy. Though everyone's nose is different, some say they can detect the Malt with others picking up the scent of the natural honey used in all of the range (with the exception of the special edition Berry Fields O' Blair). I love the uniqueness and complexity of our scents and that customers can pick up something different from them. Hope this helps.

A re-stock of our ever popular Essence of Scotland shaving soaps arrived today , first production batch since the Government lockdown. Pleased to have these back on the shelf for our customers!

Special edition Berry Fields O' Blair in stock too!
