Electric Straight Razor Strop/hone

Morning all,

As a an inventor/engineer I have these crazy ideas. I know a lot of you enjoy the traditional approach of stones and strops for sharpening razors but for the lazy amongst I was wondering if there was a way to automate this process.

Was going to have a go at making an electric hone/strop. Would likely consist of interchangeble, motor driven belts of leather, canvas and lapping film. Challenge would be getting the correct angle and pressure on the razor. Has anyone seen something similair to this or have some thoughts to share on the idea?

I think it was a documentary about how straight razors made or documentary about Dovo company straight razor department, I am not sure which one; towards the end of the process of making a straight razor, there was large round sharpening stone which looked like a coticule, turning like a record and they were laying the razor flat on the stone for honing/sharpening. So if you built something like a record player(so to speak) which could hold different grades of honing stones(must be disc shaped obviously) can be put on this turn table and also a leather disc shaped strop, also this turntable got to have forward and reverse gear or an AC motor perhaps.
Good Luck

Mmm I'm half way there. I have a record deck with a glass platter
Just need to glue some lapping film to it.
Not sure it will do my records any good though:cry: :)

Thanks for the info Sezer, think I remeber seeing that Dovo documentry somewhere. Will have a play with it, imagine mark 1 will look something along the lines of a record player .

Is this something that would interest others or is it just me being lazy?
