Dr. Martens

I have gone to Solovair / NPS shoes and probably boots. UK made and well built. I understand NPS made the original (now called vintage) DM's. Excellent casual shoes/boots and probably nice for standing on hard surfaces all day. I do like to "rest" shoes for a day especially in the winter and rainy days.

My favorite summer shoe is the Lowa Renegade low. Good for everyday, long walks, and hiking. I had the same model in mid-tops for winter and recently changed to Red Wing, Chippewa, and McKinley (NZ). Lowa is a good fit for me.

For years I have believed that Dr. Martens (DMs) were worn by beatniks and punks.

Now in my (relatively) early 70's, I now own 6 pairs. I buy them, mostly off eBay, half a size above my normal shoes and they are amazingly comfortable, sturdy and cope with my bunions with no probs.

I should add that my wife, a tad younger, has 4 pairs of DM boots
Has anyone else suffered shoe regression?
Out of snow bound boredom - been looking at DM's. Bloody hell they are expensive now

Yeah Glen, becoming a fashion statement made a big difference in price from when virtually every beat cop in our division wore a highly bulled pair of D.M.s. Nowadays of course most of our local cops are wearing " tactical " type combat style boots which look as if they were polished with a lukewarm Mars bar !

Oh yes, Hi-Tec Magnum's and the like..

I used to wear Dr Martin boots when I was a youth but now I much prefer Lowa combat boot's as favored by the police and serving squaddies when in the thick of it but as JohnnyO has said they don't take a Polish like the DMs did! :) P.

Maybe should qualify my comment about the style of work boots in common use by saying that in my world performance is more important than appearance. So if combat type boots prove more effective for the required tasks, that's the way to go.

I have been wearing Docs for the past 43 years and I can't imagine life without a pair. In the main I always have the oxblood classic but occasionally have been known to wear black. Must have the yellow stitching.

I find them comfortable with thick socks and will happily wear them for whatever event.

Great boots (for me) but I have never considered them as out and out walking boots. For that I have.....walking boots and for work.......work boots.

Docs? I wouldn't be without

Being in need of a pair of general-use sturdy boots and wanting black 'cause brown boots and black trousers is not a good look I invested in a pair of Lowa Patrol at the back end of last year. They're brilliant, loads of support, comfy, waterproof and warm. I've had Magnums in the past but they're crap by comparison, plus I can get the Lowas re-soled.

I've not had DMs for years, I never found them to be all that comfortable and they're a bit flimsy.
