Do you have RAD?

OK, so as we all know the first way to start to deal with a problem is admitting you have/had one.
"Ladies and Gentlemen I am a former RAD victim!"
OK now that's done. So how many razors do I have, well I only have 7, so why do I say I have RAD? Well the desire to buy more never seems to go completely. I constantly salivate over other razors I see on SOTD. However, I have to keep the RAD in check and refrain from clicking the 'buy' button. I bought 7 razors in as many months.

So how bad is your RAD? How many Razors do you have? How quick did you aquire your collection?

Come on, share it with the group, what happens in TSR stays in TSR. ;)

I go through various cycles of being obsessed with something. In the past it has been cameras and lenses, fishing gear, golf clubs, coffee grinders and machines, building tube amplifiers. Right now it's razors and soaps but this is starting to fade. All these cycles have the same shape - huge interest at first, curiosity to try everything, lots of posts on forums, then stabilisation and selling off and eventually ending up with exactly what I want and moving on. I keep up my audio forums since I'm a musician and that's never going to go away, but I may eventually drop the razor forums. I have enough razors, blades, soaps and brushes for the rest of my days, as many of us here do.

I am currently enjoying the process of trying different things , I have bought and sold quite a lot of Razors , so far 3 have made it to the keeper list , I have also enjoyed all the wonderful people you get to speak to and trade with. Who knew there were so many wonderful things to try.

What kind of tube amps? Ones for hifi or for guitar?

I see what you mean about having cycles of being obsessed with things. My major obsession has largely been music, it used to be buying records but transformed to buying guitars. I don't really buy as much shaving gear as some people here, my shaving purchases seem to be a distraction from buying guitar. FWIW, I've not really spent more on a razor then I have on a packet of guitar strings!

I have 69 DE razors, 38 SEs, about 10 extra handles and half a dozen straight razors, plus odds and ends like hones (including a Lillicrap). They range from old (Gillettes, Wilkinson Empire etc.) to very new. I guess the ones longest in my possession are a Schick SE and a couple of Merkurs, which are disintegrating and not included in the count, but are from the late Sixties. Apart from a couple which I don't like (Futur and Ikon Tech), all my razors get used at some time or another, although I tend not to use things like Gillette adjustables and some of the old butterflies very much, to cut down on wear and tear.

In 50 years, I've sold only one razor, a boxed Star 7 Day set, and regretted it ever since. Last year was a light one for razors, as I bought only a Dart. This year has seen my resolutions go out of the window, as so far I've bought a Zeppelin, Rex and Game Changer.

I used to collect antique shaving mugs, which looked good when I had an old house with beams to hand them on. When I moved to a newer house, I had nowhere to put them and sold the lot, bar one. I didn't find them much use for shaving, to be honest.

@les24preludes and I have a lot in common, it would seem, except that my obsessions aren't cyclical. My others are cameras and equipment, fountain pens, melodeons and bicycles.

Originally it was my stage amp that I started modifying, but these days it's highly niche audio stuff - I only use directly heated triodes (DHTs) for the last 10 years and I've been designing some very complex circuits to optimise them, together with friends from the London Audiocircle. PM me if interested - I'm in London.

My wife commented that razors are cheaper than guitars. I can't afford the kind of guitars that I want. However I have settled with what I have. I think razors will go the same way eventually.

Seems to be a few musicians on shaving forums. Beats the myth that we're all unshaven Bohemians. Musicians are always interested in hardware. They're also very good at practicing things until they get them exactly right.

I am absolute idiot when it comes to anything of an electrical nature - soldering the grounding wire in an electrical guitar is about as much as I can handle. I'd love to be able to build/mod a valve amp though or even a guitar pedal though.

I think there are a few musicians who are brave enough to take on a razor, there are a few on this forum? There was the chap in Germany who's a guitar tech, a few others as well.

I own about 45 DE and SE razors, acquired over about six years. Most of them I bought in the first couple of years, but now I just buy or trade when something really catches my eye. I've pretty much concluded that I can get a great shave from just about any of them, so there's little point spending loads of money in the hope I will find "the one" (although I've been very tempted by a few modern SE models). There's actually more variety in the performance of soaps and creams, and they're usually cheaper.

Once your technique gets to a certain point you can take on just about any safety razor. I wouldn't personally go less efficient that an Old Type or a Gillette Slim on 6, but anything more efficient should be OK. I'm not tempted by modern SEs - happy with my MMOC, MMCP and 1912.
