Dense Synthetic Brush

A good dense synthetic brush must comes with a perfect balance loft height, backbone and splay. When the loft is too short it's becomes very springy and doesn't splay very well the backbone is too strong, if the loft height is too long becomes very floppy and it's splay too quickly and looses it's backbone.

It's not very easy to find the perfect dense synthetic brush straight away, because you have to buy them until you've find out the perfect synthetic brush as YMMV.

I have two perfect synthetic brush for face and bowl lathering in my den which are:-

The RazoRock Plissoft (Bruce handle) 24/57mm knot and the Edward Jagger (EJ28) v2.0 Silvertip Fibre in Faux Horn handle 25/58mm knot.

I'm pretty sure the RazoRock Plissoft Beehive handle 28/57mm knot would be excellent as well, I haven't tried it yet.

Really well said.

From my experience if a synth knot is really dense, it could mean the glue bump has been set too high, and the face feel of a brush with a very high glue bump is not the pleasing thing.

Yup, exactly!
A "dense" synthetic generally means a high glue bump and they are quite horrible!

A badger behaves very differently so even a low loft allows it to splay naturally whilst providing good backbone.

The splay/backbone characteristics of synthetics are not comparable to natural hair brushes.

The only way to have density and splay with a synthetic is to set the loft at about 52mm and have zero glue bump above the handle. I have yet to use a synthetic like this, and I have nearly 50 of them!

Despite synthetics not being able to match the splay/density metrics of natural hair brushes, they are still the best at making lather for me.

I find the synthetic loft set 52mm is too springy for me when I tried to face lather, when I cannot get a normal balance splay using the tips of the synthetic brush.

Yah, me too.
The problem is that a synthetic brush with a loft of 52mm that has no glue bump is incredibly rare.

One such brush I have is the muhle STFv2 23mm. It splays very nicely even with the short loft as there is zero glue bump so the free loft is the entire 52mm.

Generally synthetics with a loft of 55-57mm will have glue bumps of 5-12mm, making the free loft 50mm or less.

In recent orders, I have found Yaqi to have really improved as they are better controlling the glue bump size.

I agree about the loft size and glue bump. I have a Yaqi brush with similar specs, the Mysterious Space Handle with a Fan Tuxedo knot, I think it's a 26mm knot, with a 55mm high loft and a 2 to 3mm glue bump. It splays like a dream but the downside it is a bit floppy (near enough no backbone in the slightest bit), it seems to flick a bit of water whilst face lathering, which isn't much of an issue as the brush is easily the most efficient brush I own. It seems to make a huge amount of lather from the least amount of cream/soap in the least amount of time.
