hi all
looking for a new de razor , old ones are 40 years old and on there last legs ,just going to buy a murker 933cl for travelling with ,thinking of the 1904 as well , can swap heads over apparently.also like the hd34c .and the slant 37c.
anyone have any recommendations.thanks rac .

Some of the Merkur models are 2-piece and some 3-piece. The 2-piece models have the baseplate fixed to the handle so the heads can't be swapped (like the 34C).
The 3-piece models (like the 1904) can be swapped around even with old Gillettes etc, the threads are the same.

If you are after one of these also look at the Edwin Jagger razors. I have more info if you need it.

cheers

Pete

40 year old razors are not on their last legs as has already been mentioned.
If I was purchasing a new razor I think I would chose the Merkur classic. I'm thinking mild razors suit me best.

Maybe rac's 40 year old razors are on their last legs and so he wants a new one. I don't think he means all old razors are.

In fact, a particularly mind-blowing book, The World Without Us by Alan Weisman states that bronze sculptures will still be recognizable after 10 million years. Obviously there will be significant "bronzing". Tough stuff!

hi all
emm ,well i say they are on there last legs because about 22 years ago the threads went in the handle ,so what i done was cut three threads of the handle . about 15 years back i re tapped them . still ok now really ,threads a bit looser i suppose ,hate to think how many blades have been through them . i tend to use one for shaving my neck with the head loose .can get some neat hairlines like this if you are brave enough ,can be a evil tool adjusted like that as a few will probably know . my 20 year old son found this out shaving his neck , frighted to death of them now .having them loose don't do the threads any good .so fancy a new one or more ,fascination with sharp things .over a 32 year period with them have had a few horror story experiences with the heads loose . think in the past somebody been screwing them up to tight or cross threaded them ,maybe they had a bad experience with a loose head , . don't think it was my father ,never did ask where he got them ,i found them in his shed when i was 14 .as long as i can remember he used a electric one .

Ok - that sounds definitely suboptimal

There are still heaps of vintage ones around (for not much at all - most expensive one I've bought was nearly a fiver) - for myself, I've never felt the need to splash the folding on a new new one (apart from the Parker I bought at the start to see if I could do this DE thing without a trip to A&E - and having experienced one Parker, I'd counsel against anyone buying one) - vintage razors all the way for me.

Erwin on this board sells some amazing vintage razors.Take a look at this thread of an HD rocket he had

It would be worth dropping him a line and see what he has for your budget.

hi all
yesterday had a merkur travel turn up in the post and a 1904 .all i can say is good choice ,used the 1904 last night ,ace shave ,and this morning used the travel . ,just the same ,great , heads are the same ,so would be expected eh ..
boab .. thanks for that post the rockets look great . think i am going to have a little collection going here .
pete . thanks too you are right ,the heads fit off the Gillette's ,bonus all round then ,my old Gillette's have a aluminum handles and are pretty slack ,as i leave them slightly use for a really close shave , DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME .ha .can be bloody dangerous in the wrong hands .
anyway the merkur's are of top quality for sure and i think it was a good choice .
to all that posted big thank you .rac :)

I'd recommend an HD every time! Only razor I use now.

I am curious about the 1904 though. Is it the same head as the HD but with lighter handle?

Also curious about open combs. Have tried a Slant but wasn't for me, I seemed to keep missing bits and struggled to get BBS all over, maybe I just didn't adjust my technique enough!

Open comb seems like a good combo of straight blade with more blade exposed!

hi
no its not the same head, 3 piece the 1904 , good shave though and cheap to buy £16.50.probably same head with the long thread going into handle . :) rac :D
