Cant for the life of me get rid of these razor bumps, please help

Hi Dan

Looking at the photos, I would say you have ingrown hairs - most likely caused by applying too much pressure to the razor.
Most cartridge razors are very smooth, and feel very safe, which gives the user the sense of security to apply more pressure than is required to get a good close shave.

You've likely noticed that online shaving forums are packed with photos of shiny razors of different styles etc - far be it from me to try to persuade you to change your cartridge razor to a double edge razor, but . . . . Your skin would thank you for it in the long run.

Firstly , try using much less pressure, and only shave in the direction of your beard growth for a few weeks to see if it helps. Whatever you do - do not try to shave with a straight razor, as mentioned by someone else - it takes skill to use a straight razor, and your skin isn't ready for that learning curve

Good luck

Thanks for the comments, in terms of ingrown hairs what should i do to treat? its around 4th day since i shaved and they are starting to get itchy again but im going to try and hold off shaving to let them go down hopefully!

An excellent product that I have tried is Bump Stopper by High Times. It is a soothing cream that can be applied directly after shaving and on days that you don't and provides relief and reduction in appearance of razor bumps and irritation.

Ill give this a go thank you! Have you ever used salicyclic acid to help with the bumps?

I have and I do. Bump Stopper is made with salicylic acid as is Skin Tend which is another excellent product I can recommend albeit a little more pricey compared to other treatments. If you are in the mood for experimenting, there are instructions online for making your own salicylic acid face toner from aspirin which is made from salicylic acid.

One of the best ways to limit ingrowing hairs is to exfoliate regularly so that the pores don't have anything in them that makes it easier for hairs to become ingrown. I use a soap by the Outdoor Soap Company made with Lavender and Litsea and it is the best soap I have tried for exfoliating my skin. Since using it I have not had an issue with ingrowing hairs after shaving at all. As always YMMV. It's available from here: https://outdoorsoap.co

Brilliant thanks for your help. So should i avoid shaving until they clear up or i notice less itchiness and how long should this usually take? Ive got some bump stopper coming tomorrow so hopefully that helps

Will the bumps just not go on their own then if i leave them? Im a bit hesitant to shave and be caught in the cycle of making them worse again?

Not being a healthcare professional, the best advice I would give is that if it repeatedly flares up you ought to seek medical advice.
A good pharmacist should be able to advise - (given that you would be unlikely to get an appointment with your GP at this present time for a non emergency)

I have used bump stopper for a week now and im really seeing results so thank you! ill post a pic later on the improvement!

I just have a question though, should i not use it everyday? My skin has dried out a bit on my neck and im unsure whether that is due to excess use of bump stopper? should i try to combine use of this with aloe vera or a moisturiser?

Thanks in advance!

Glad to hear it is working so well for you, I have found it to be very effective for sure! Yes, it can be used every day but you don't need a lot with each application. Also, a good quality moisturiser is a good plan. When I've needed it I would tend to put the Bump Stopper on at night time or after shaving and then put on moisturiser in the morning as required for the day if I noticed any dryness. (y)

Thanks for your reply I'll start to moisturise more I think. I can definitely see an improvement from the pics I put on here last week and it seems much less itchy now

Very noticeable. Glad to see that the treatment is working out for you and you are happy with the results. Throwaway that beastly cartridge razor and treat yourself with another mild DE safety razor :)

Thanks a lot for your help that cream is amazing, so cheap too! I do trust your judgement now after that haha are there any DE razors you would recommend i have never used one before?

There are so many great options and I'm sure each person on here will have their own opinions as to which would be a good 1st DE razor. For me it would be either a Muhle 89 or a cheap and cheerful used Gillette Tech. Neither will set you back many pennies, the Tech can be picked up for around £10-£15 on eBay the 89 will set you back around £30 new. Either razor paired with an Astra green blade would be my go to but you might find it worth getting a sample pack from the likes of Connaught or agentshave and seeing which blades you prefer for your skin type. Samples are a great way of discovering different types of blades and how the smoothness of each compares with their sharpness. A good tutorial video on YouTube will will help you prepare for your first DE shave. The key principle being do not force or push the razor on the skin. Let the razor do all of the work. It's a completely different type of shave to a cartridge shave and that is one of the most important things to remember when switching to DE shaving.

Hi new poster here. For the past year or so i have been stuck in a cycle with razor bumps. I seem to shave then it gets itchy after a few days so i have to shave again over the area to relieve the itchiness (which i doubt is helping). At the minute im just using gilette disposable razors with 2 blades but i feel like i have tried everything. I use aloe vera and post shave balm after every shave and use shaving gel and warm water prior to shaves. I seem to take all the steps required to prevent razor bumps and now i feel like they're getting worse.

Im just not sure what else i can do now, how can i get rid of them? Do i need to try and hold off shaving for a couple of weeks to try and get rid of them but each time i try to do that i feel like my neck is getting more red from the itchiness.

Thanks in advance
I had the same problem as you and was using the small blue 2 blade Gillette disposables. I got a Merkur 34c Astra blade and good soap/cream. I started using that and the problem didn't go away. I was only doing a with the grain pass and found that I was left with a not so close shave. I then thought what the hell let's go for a closer shave (counterintuitive I thought) but guess what shaving closer with a two pass shave first with the grain then across helped my skin immensely. I think what was happening was the before I wasn't shaving close enough and the hair was growing into the skin again this is a common problem. Give that a go and see how you get on, it did take some time to heal and was very inflamed for the first few weeks but it worked for me. Im still not perfect and have just one or two little spots but my skin was like yours so it's a big improvement I know how you feel. Remember go easy and carefully loads of soap with the grain then accross the grain and stick at it for at least a month.
