Burning feeling

Hi all,

After using certain soaps / creams I appear to get a burning sensation. Based on experience of other soaps etc... my guess is that it is something in the scent but I was wondering whether anyone else experiences this and how I can work out what it is that results in this. The main offenders to do have been TOBS sandalwood cream, P&B Iceni (I'm really gutted about this as the stuff is amazing and smells beautiful. I don't have any issues with other P&B soaps) and the Bodyshop crème. NSS neroli gave me slight issues too.

Any thoughts / comments appreciated.

Are you using enough water? Too little can cause irritation. Also, think about classic strategies such as no pressure and maybe cutting down the number of passes. I'd start elimination by looking at the amount of water. Also, cold water rinsing between passes and at the end of the shave can help.

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind. Taking the P&B as an example though - I recently purchased Iceni and Imperial Rum pots. I use the same amount of water and technique with both, the IR is beautiful and causes no issues but Iceni really starts to burn around 10 minutes post shave (although I can start to feel something during the second pass). I tend to use warm water between passes and cold water at the end. It does seem curious that IR is fine but Iceni causes me an issue.

It might be an ingredient you're sensitised to, then. Interesting that you should mention TOBS Sandalwood. I always got on well with the cream (it was my first ever cream); but something in the soap irritated me. Witch hazel and/or Aloe Vera might be useful standbys if you're going to continue using soaps that might be problematic.

TOBS Sandalwood practically set my face on fire, and P&B Whitechapel was nearly as bad. Both lost sandalwood as a scent note. I have heard of others having a sensitivity to it, so I'm guessing it's that.

I could also notice it second pass, then (if I bothered) it was terrible third.

Yep, I myself can't use Maca Root, NSS Neroli, any Sandalwood soap and near enough every single soap with fragrance oils I have tried and a lot of other soaps as well. I really should get around to PIFing all the soaps I bought but cannot use.

It sucks for sure, as whenever I buy a new soap there's a very high chance it will make my skin burn :(

That's proper sh*t! Sorry to hear that. What soaps and creams do work for you?

I can still use a fair number of soaps, but they tend to be the 'classics' ie Palmolive, Arko, Vitos, Tabac and so on. Tabac is possibly as exciting a scent as my skin take. Which is like the English tourist in Spain who can only eat Egg and Chips. Even if he wants to eat Paella the bowels say no.

We sound quite similar! I would recommend Mitchell's and P&B Imperial Rum and Trafalgar.

Palmolive is not a soap for sensitive skin as the colours and fragrance is quite irritant (hence the sensitive version has neither)

Here is the funny side of things. I can use the 'normal' Palmolive cream, but the 'Sensitive' counterpart makes my skin burn!

Very interesting. Thanks for pointing that out.
