Brush for a newbie

Badgers are a protected species in Europe so the hair is sourced from overseas, usually China.
That's right, but many of the brush makers (e.g. Simpson, shavemac, Thater) just import the hair, but sort, grade and tie the knots themselves. Some smaller makers, however, import finished knots, some of which are very good and some of which are not so good.

Executive Shaving look like they have some very reasonable offerings from their own brand range. I've actually been thinking about picking up one of their brushes soon. When I started DE shaving, I picked up the Simpsons 'Special Pure Badger' brush for around £18, last year. It's serving me pretty well and it's a good starter brush. I'm probably going to upgrade soon anyway. I don't think you can go wrong with the quality Simpsons provide, though.

Synthetic brushes are not "as good as anything now". They are better by margin in every aspect. Aside, perhaps, "the soul" - which is just something you make up in your mind for yourself anyway.
I own three Muehle synths - including one premium and one custom, but their basic 23mm brush is what I have used 99% of the time for the past 7 years or so.
Curious about that Razorock, might give it a go sometime.

Right now MÜHLE couldn't smell YaQi's ass on a windy day as they are so far behind the curve. YaQi is where it is at, I can assure you. ;)

Having given up on the non-chinese made idea and given the great reviews, I bought a handle from shavemac and a synbad knot from AP shave co. Is there a way of fixing the two together so that they can be separated at a later date so that I can reuse the handle?

Yeah, been considering that as a travel version. Bought one for a friend some time ago, need to get his feedback too. Given their prices it won't hurt to try.

I can't answer your question, but the AP Synbad synthetic knot is the best synthetic I've tried so far. I use it as my travel brush now, it having replaced my Muhle v2 synthetic. Nevertheless, I still prefer my badger knots for shaving at home.

I was thinking about separating the knots too. How about glueing two powerful magnets on the handle and on the knot?
