Boar or Synth recommendations for face lathering?

10051 vs 49 in DIY handles, the small one is more scrubby so needs a longer soak for a comfortable face lathering shave
Thanks for the comparisons @Nisse . Very helpful indeed. Later on tonight when the kids are in bed I'll get more chance to look at all this info properly.

Another thing I should have mentioned earlier.....I always shave after I've been in the shower for a good 10-15 minutes (so my face is 'nice, hydrated and ready to go' lol). My badger brush always get soaked in very warm water for this period of time, so pre soaking is certainly not an issue if that's what's required.

Boar all the way. But for something different consider a boar & badger mix; Semogue has a nice one. The only time I use a synthetic is when I travel as they dry very quickly. I face lather only and don't like the face feel of a synthetic primarily because it doesn't splay easily and feels springy.

Have you tried soaking the synthetic in a hot water? They splay much better, but you lose the little bit of backbone you have with them...

My current favourite among synthetic brushes, at "normal" loft a supersoft make up brush but setting low and wide adds backbone, not like a boar or finest twoband badger but noticable and without springy feel when splaying, this in turn adds body transforming soft cloud into soft pillow, surprised me, not bad, not bad at all, but all black would have been nice.

Is that a Tuxedo?
What size knot is it?

Haircut & Shave is simply calling it "Brown & White". It may look like a brown and white Tuxedo but is softer. Sold as 24mm but rather portly so if I remember correctly hole in handle measures 27mm at the top tapering down to 24 at the bottom.

After another hour or two of reading.....I'm going to rule the 48 out as the knot seems enormous. 98/49 have identical knots, won't rule them out as widely available. 11829 comes highly recommended.....10290 and 10066 under serious consideration owing to @Missoni 's superb thread about the smaller knotted Omegas. I'll read that through in it's entirety tomorrow. I appreciate all the information, advice and recommendations but Missoni and I think are on very similar wavelengths in terms of what I'm looking for out of the brush - i.e. massaging/scrubbing capability. Anything considered remotely 'floppy' I'd rule out as that's not really what I'm after.

I should also mention that I generally only do a few passes right now so a smaller brush not holding a full 3/4 passes worth of lather doesn't concern me.
Get yourself a Proraso Brush (I think it is an Omega P83 or something like that). Same handle of the 48 and 49, which I find super comfortable to hold. The know has a similar diameter (plus or minus a mm) but the loft is shorter. Nice backbone and I do find Omega breaking in quicker than Semogue. Mine had no smell whatsoever and it is still my favourite amongst my other brushes (boars, Badgers and synthetics). Just used again this morning with Tabac. Awesome performer and ridiculously cheap.

I thought I'd read somewhere that the proraso offering was identical to either the 48 or 49 (presumably 49) but rebranded, although it may have been just the handle like you said.

Thanks for the info.

I have the 49, which loft should be slightly shorter than the 48, and it is longer than the Proraso. Although I love my 49, I find the Proraso easier to manage. I don't need to put my fingers at the base of the loft to avoid slaying all over my face.

I know it's a completely left field suggestion, but how about an Omega S Brush?
I just dug mine out as I'm off on hols next month, so put together a travel shave kit.
Just had a shave with the Omega and P&B soap(awesome!) and I totally forgot how great it was at face lathering.
It was a little bit scratchy compared to my Plissofts but my face felt exfoliated and massaged and the S Brush is like any other synth to care for. They can be found for well under a tenner.
I'm sure I read years ago that it was a synth to mimic boar bristle brushes? But as per usual, I am probably wrong.

@Nisse a few months later and as I'm running out of things to do I finally sorted this out

I went for the 10065 (same as 66 but my choice of a blue handle). I went for this firstly as I figured although perhaps not quite as scrubby as I'll end up with, it's probably a good entry level to boar with a good balance of what I'm looking for. The second reason is I got it for £6 delivered

I hope to have it for my shave next week. I know it will need some breaking in but I'm looking forward to using it.

Thanks to you in particular and other on this thread that have provided insightful help and advice.

@Missoni it was actually you that I meant to mention! Nisse was a help but it was your posts on the 4 brushes etc that was a really big factor in helping me choose. Thanks man!

Badger brushes are meant be used like a paint brush, with back and forth strokes
as opposed to being ‘splayed' and ‘scrubbed' in a circular motion.

Is that a fact?

That's first time I hear that and I certainly don't use them like that.... well I do a good scrub while building a lather and then as a paint brush to distribute the lather equally over the face.

I have two boar brushes and I stll don't know how to use them, I never enjoy using them.

I have a couple of RR synthetic brushes and I like them a lot.... if I'm rushed for time I go for a synthetic brush, it takes less time loading and less time building the lather. The other time I chose a synthetic over a badger brush is when I want a soap to last longer...synthetic need less load to build an equally good lather.

I would avoid a SOC for this very reason, they do take months (I speak from painful experience!)

I bought your SOC and it's yet to break :) I've only used it 3 or 4 times.
