Blade Review Spreadsheet

Thanks for posting this spreadsheet. It's exactly what I'm looking for and your evaluation of Derby blades tallies with my experience, so I'm prepared to back your assessments.

This is great. I've just logged back into the forum after many years. I've been using personna reds, but have found them inconsistent recently. In that one edge shaves and the other edge doesn't. So I've been looking for alternatives. One thing I didn't like when I first had my sampler back was the glue dot you got some brands of blade. I think mostly the russian ones. It's a shame (for me) that something like that isn't noted. However, lots of alternatives to choose from.

Wow, the Gillette Platinum scored so low for closeness! To me they feel on par with Feathers and much sharper than Astra SP. When I got tons of weepers (and a BBS) from the Gillette Platinums with a mild razor I went to check online for reviews and found this sharpness scale done by Razor Emporium.

There is one interesting thing I noticed. The feeling during shaving does not always correlate with the result of the shave. For example, if I use the Derby Extra blade with my Fatip Grande, it feels quite scratchy and not so comfortable while shaving but I get a superb result concerning skincare and closeness. Some other blades give a nicer feeling while shaving (i.ex. Astra Superior Stainless) but they produce noticeable more stress for my skin. The closeness is quite the same.

I'm really surprised to see Gillette 7 o'clock Yellows get a 2/5 sharpness rating there. I've read many instances of people saying they are almost as sharp as Feathers only not as rough. They're still too rough for me though and leave my face feeling sore afterwards even sometimes after applying a balm

I pay zero attention to subjective tests of blades. Note that RE rates Astra SS as one of the least sharp where the scientific tests done by refinedshave dot com find it's one of the sharpest. I go with objective tests. Especially when you know the guy offering subjecive ratings wears a beard....(I'm too old for an LOL here but if I were younger..)

Looking at that objective razor sharpness test site, Kai are listed less sharp than Derby greens. I thought Kai was on par with Feather.

7 o'clock yellows are ranked least sharp of all 7 o'clocks, less sharp than Gillette Platinum or Silver Blues.

Interesting...

Kais get tricky because of their additional width the marginal increase in exposure may be perceived as sharpness whereas objectively it's not actually that sharp out of the box.
