Best way to clean shaving brushes?

If brush is rinsed well after shave I think it is kept clean but I am not mr 100% in this respect so occasionally wash my brushes using hair shampoo.
In hard water, it starts to develop a white scale near the knot base. A soak in Borax solution (or alternative) or white vinegar worked well for me when I was in London.

Borax for natural hair, as it is alkaline (basic), while vinegar or citric acid is acidic and could therefore be too aggressive. Furthermore, borax has a disinfectant effect and and some manufacturers explicitly warn against using citric acid.

As for synthetic brushes, I first use dishwashing detergent and then baking powder.

Both work like a charm. Hard water here. :)
