Hi all. Anyone got any recommendations for the best YouTube video they have seen on soap/bowl lathering. Wet shaved for years but still not sure if I'm getting the lather I should be! So have used creams mainly.

Re: the above video, is that really all there is to lathering shave soap? I've always gone for creams presuming they were just easier to lather. Is that video a pretty good summary of soap lathering then? Just swirl a damp brush around on top of the soap puck, to 'charge' it until the bristles start to clump, then do the rest of the whipping in a bowl / hand / direct on your face? I might try a soap for a change

Hi Dave

Yes, it's pretty much all there is to it.

I too only used creams for years, but mostly use soaps now.
I find that (most) soaps perform better than some creams, (not that there aren't very good creams available)

Don't mean to thread jack, but what's a good gateway into soaps? Not up for really wacky scents particularly, just something nice and slick that holds up well for 3 passes, maybe a nice sandalwood or lime

Soaps definitely take longer and are harder to create a lather compared to creams. But I'm yet to find a cream better than a soap. Soaps give better protection and slickness.
I'm talking in very broad strokes but my statement still stands true.

The easiest soaps I've found to create a lather are Fine Accoutrements and Saponificio Varesino. Both I highly recommend for protection and slickness.

@Blackmass The amount of soap used in that first video you posted would be enough for 4 or 5 shaves with 3 turns, wow, what an overkill. The video of @dave79 is a more normal approach.

The very first video posted gives a good view on how to do it, but hey, you can find tutorial videos where one is convinced the only way to do it is upside down (US vids are among the weirdest, hands down) @Ratty-Chewy If you love the smell of Sandalwood, the very best is the Crazy Sandalwood by TFS.
It is a whole journey of discovery, just to find what you like, webshops like Shavedash sell samples, good for at least 5 shaves so you can get a good impression what it smells like wet and foamy and dry, there can by quite a difference between the dry soap and the end result on your face ;-)
If you like the stronger scents, try some samples of for instance Stirling soap co. They have some quite excellent ones! For example, Margaritas in the Arctic, Sharp Dressed Man and such. If you like fruity scents, in the Trade/Sale part someone offers the Mandarin one with AS Balm, it is rather nice.
Have fun, i can tell you It is a (scent) journey i enjoy very much.

I don't disagree with you. I've posted a few videos as I think you can pick up tips from all of them.
There are so many ways to create a lather. It's just finding the right way which works for you.

Thanks everyone (that's) been very helpful indeed. Sorry for the delay replying new arrival in the family, became a Grandad at weekend so few things been put to one side!
