Best off-the-peg suits?

I bought a Next suit about 7 years ago and it has done me well and looks fine to be honest.

I did read on another forum someone asking about suits and the general consensus was that the current bunch of Next suits are not as good in terms of quality so something has gone downhill.

Bought my suit from Next about 4 years ago - wish i had bought another pair of the trousers in the next size up at the same time

Tut tut.

With a jump, feet together place! Twice round my beautiful body. GO!

Yes, yes I know, not quite Mr Equator yet though! :)

Did my fitness test yesterday, so still in OK condition for a 44 yo - pity I'm only 19 (mentally at least) ;)

It's not the getting up to speed that's the problem - it's stopping the momentum

Does anyone else in the world do Burpees & Spotty Dogs or are PTI Mirror Commando's just taking the piss?

It's what they're good at.

Nothing else mind.

M&S all the way...

they offer a variety of cuts from the baggier standard suits up to the finely tailored colleczione and sartorial collections.

Its worth noting, the italian fabrics used in many of the M&S suits actually come from the same makers as some of the classic italian brands such as cerutti, armani and canali.

They offer some fantastic pieces to suit most prices.

Don't buy a linen suit, it will always look like you have slept the night in it.

M&S do a linen/polyester suit:

If you want a mid priced suit and have a larger build, TM Lewin arevery good. Don't believe all the "half price" sales pitch, but for £200-250 they're very good. Beats most of the stuff you find in John Lewis etc. I have an £600 Ferraud suit and the TM Lewin is on a par, probably a bit better made actually.

Btw I'm 6'2" with 46" chest so most off the peg isn't cut right for me.

Can't beat a bespoke canvassed suit though!

I found that there were few ready made suits that I looked good in without having some tailoring done on them. The trick is to find someone good. I have two places that I trust and for a little more they get raid of that 'sack' look in the coat and make the pants so it doesn't look like you have a diaper on. Good ones are hard to find , found mine by having a few thing altered, here and there, until I come up with a good one.

I usually get most of my gear from Slater's menswear - the one in central manc is very good, very "oooo! suits you sir" service

Very right - I love it in there. :). Free adjustments and repairs for life not to be sneezed at, either.

Relatively few high street outfits can cater to me at all - 52 chest, etc.

re debenhams:

They offer 10% of your first purchase to each new store card holder. Couple of years ago I needed two new suits. Waited till the sale, applied for store card, popped into store found two suits marked down from around 400 to 200 or so each, bought them on the new store card, got my 10% discount. Went home and paid off store card that afternoon, cut the card in half and never used it again. Felt very smug.

Also agree on the alterations thing, it is never expensive to have done and can kick a suit from just looking ok to looking a million dollars.

You could also look into the online tailor thing, Indochino is a well known outfit. I tried them last christmas for this years new suit. ( I wear the things for work everyday so operate a rotation system, new suit every year, old best suit becomes the new everyday suit and so on.). I wasn't super impressed with the outcome apart from the tailored shirt I got as a freebie, which is quite amazing.

For 60's style suits, the best off the peg one's I've found are from Adam of London on Portobello Road, nice bloke and great service too. 3ply mohair, mohair tonik etc. £350 (2 piece), £395 (3 piece), wool suits £295 etc. Does some cracking fitted Crombie style coats too for £195.

Quality and fitting (I.E. They are not mass produced, fit all size bodies with same chest size for maximum profit rubbish) is streets ahead of all of the junk or the overpriced designer crap on the high street. The closest thing to a tailored suit I've had off the peg I've in 30 years!

His shirts are really well made and well fitted too.

Highly recommended.

I'm not connected to the company in any way by the way, I live in Barnsley but had a very favourable experience there on a recent visit to London (It was less favourable when the wife found out how much I'd bought in there though :)
