Belts / Jeans

Bit of a random thing to post on here but I figured it was as good a place as any to ask. My jeans are slipping almost constantly and it's incredibly annoying especially when out and about, to have to be pulling them up so frequently. I've nearly always bought Debenhams own Red Herring brand. But when I go to buy new ones it's really hit and miss if they have the right size in and I like to try things on instore as I can't be bothered with having to send back online orders that don't fit. After a few unsuccessful attempts to get some new pairs, out of desperation I ended up buying some Tesco jeans, something I thought I'd never do. They were elasticated and actually felt really comfy when I tried them on and bought them.

Soon after I realised that they were slipping badly however tightly I fastened my belt. I put it down to the fact that they were so cheap and had less belt loops than I was used to, only 5. There was one loop right over my arse then a massive gap to the next loops on the sides of my waist. I figured I needed more loops so went out shopping and obsessively counted the number of belt loops on every pair of jeans that I liked in my size. I guessed that it was most likely a trait of cheapo jeans to only have a puny number of belt loops, but to my surprise found that even some of the more expensive jeans only had 5 loops too. I ended up buying some Levi 501 jeans just because they were the only jeans in the shop in my size that had 7 belt loops. Within days I realised that my £60 ‘proper' jeans were slipping just as badly as my £15 cheapo jeans, so wondered if the belt loop thing wasn't as significant a factor as I'd presumed after all.

I even wonder if the belt itself is to blame. I used the same River Island leather one for over 15 years and never had a problem. Then I needed a bigger size and got a Tesco one when I got their jeans. It's still leather but made of cheap stuff I guess. I am still trying to figure out why a pair of jeans that felt so comfy in the shop simply will not stay up even with a belt on. Could it be that my Tesco belt has warped badly thus is not doing its job properly (on one side of my waist it's pretty much rolled right back onto itself)? Could even the heavy buckle be dragging them down (it digs into me when I sit down anyway)? Perhaps it's to do with the style of fit? They are straight leg and I normally get bootcut, but that said the Tesco ones that slipped badly were bootcut anyway.

I have a bit of a belly but not a huge one and no bigger than a couple of years ago when I didn't have the slipping jeans problem. Any ideas? Do you think I need a different style of jeans (hell will freeze over before I can wear skinny jeans!), a better quality belt or something else? Sorry for the long post, and thanks to anyone who made it to the end, I'm just sick of having to pull my jeans up what seems like every minute of the day, I am reluctant even to put anything in the pockets, like a phone, as I feel it will drag them down even quicker. I can't really put the belt on any tighter or it will be uncomfy. Help!

@dave79 , I feel your pain

I too have the same issue with jeans
I (usually) only wear 501's, but recently in Costco I saw some jeans for around £15 a pair, and thought they would do for around the house etc.
When I got them home I realised that they were 'comfort fit', meaning that they are kind of elasticated - not only the waist band, but the entire material.
Now, this really put me off at first. . . . I'm 49, not bloody 69 !!
I have to say - these are the most comfortable jeans I have ever worn - EVER !
They don't slip, no need to wear a belt, and they wash up ok too.
If you, or a friend/relative has Costco membership, they're well worth a look

I too feel your pain and share your experience. I've tried all sorts of jeans from high-end (meaning expensive), through middle of the pack to low-end, but none has fit me well enough so that they don't slip down. In my clothes closet right now I have Brax, Tommy Bahama and Wrangler. In the past I've had Levi, Lee, M&S and Costco. They've all ended up slipping down even though they felt good in the store and when I first put them on at home. I've tried numerous belts as well, but to no avail. My wife says it's my shape, ie no/flat ass, and because I like my jeans and trousers to sit on my waist. I'm beginning to think she could be right regarding my body shape because I don't have a gut (I'm 5'10” and weigh 170lbs). I'm tempted to try the slim fit jeans (not skinny) that Levis offers and if they don't fit better I may just have to resort to braces to avoid the dreaded plumbers crack.

Try the belts from Grip6.com. They're brilliant. infinately adjustable as there are no preset holes. I have 4 of them (they deliver to the UK). I find the holes on cheap belts just stretch out and look unsightly (usually just bonded leather) and good full leather belts these days are very expensive. I wear Marks and Sparks stretchy jeans and find they're a good quality and value.

Braces.

I've had two pairs converted to take button braces and never looked back. Look really smart as well.

Like you I found with a lot of cheaper jeans belt loops are an after thought and in the wrong places which makes them hang like a bag of shit. M&S come to mind. Nice jeans, okay price but terrible to wear.

I only wear HIUT's now. Ain't cheap but will last for years and years. My total wardrobe is 2 pairs and one other brand pair as a 'mmmm maybe something different today'

I still only buy 501's but from the states, and always look and find 7 hoop waists. They are there but you have too look. I pickes up 3 pairs this year the cheapest $9.99 the most expensive $14.99 plus tax.
I look in the final reductions in Sears and Macys.
The belt dont cause any problems on 7 hoops.

Thanks for the input guys. I like the sound of more elasticated jeans like the Costco ones mentioned. I dug out my old River Island belt & can probably just about get away with it, meaning that it's quite tight and I can probably only make one more hole in it!

Also I remembered I have a leather Adidas golf belt which I've rarely worn and even then only for golf, so I'm gonna try it this week. Straight away it seems far better quality than the supermarket one which has already caved in on itself in one place and I've only had it a few months. Must be the buckle but it feels a lot bulkier & heavier than both my others. Will see how it goes this week.

I even read some articles about the best men's belts, one was clearly aimed at businessmen / people who like the best brands. Some were £300-£400. No thanks !
