also just trying out to see if I can work out how to upload photos !

I took this one a couple of years ago.

If I don't mow my front lawn, I get a really nice patch of Bird Foot Trefoil growing on it, and the bees love it. So I mow it until mid may, and then leave it until the trefoil goes over. Also have red clover and self-heal growing.

Ian,

That's lovely. Great photo. In Welsh, that breed is a Cacwn Tingoch, which literally translated means Red-Arsed Bumblebee. Biology would be much more fun taught in Welsh! :)

Thanks.

Yep, I often call them red-arsed bees, although officially red-tailed.

Another that springs to mind is Wheatear, which was "white arse" owing to the birds white rump that is very visible as it flies away!

Great pics. I'm currently documenting and reporting bumblebee types and behaviour for a national census at the moment. I have a small orchard at the rear of my house, and with all this hot and calm weather the place is literally buzzing!
