AP Shave Co. Brush Advice

Well, I swallowed the "lure" and ordered a new brush with his new SilkSmoke 26mm Fan/Flat Top knot set to 12 - 13mm per an e-mail chat with him regarding splay needs. I have never really suffered from BAD, I just wanted a new synth fan/flat top style to replace the Tuxedo one I sold to a buddy two years ago and sorely missed and this "new" knot seems to be just the ticket. We shall see.

Please report back when you have had a chance to use it for a while. I've been eyeing a ApShaveCo brush and might pull the trigger when things get back to normal as I imagine delivery times aren't the best right now.

Elaborate if you will please on the performance of this knot against other synths if possible.

to be honest i struggle to do a critique on a brush, the 2BED is really nice though. its quite full on the face and soft, i think the density of it gives it a bit of backbone and it splays well. i have synbad brushes and really like them, ill use one back to back with the 2BED sometime to give me a better idea of the differences :)

Thanks for the info, and please update us when you are more familiar with it.

if this is worth anything as info, after 2 months of using 2BED back to back with my SynBad, I like my SynBad better. Softness of tips, density and mostly the bulb shape. Fan with less density and the usual bigger bloom doesn't work very well for me. Still a very good synthetic compared to others.

Martin, I went back and read all the posts in case I missed it, but are you a face or bowl latherer?

It depends how you want to look at it. I wouldn't call it hybrid, because it's closer to face lather. The reason behind is I have too many soaps and I try to keep them in best shape for longer, i.e. dry. Thus, I never load the brush from the tub. I scrape a small amount in a bowl and then I swirl until the so called proto-lather is developed. In the process, I add a drops of water to the bowl, as in bowl lathering. However, because the density of the lather is so thick and the major part or follow-up work is done on my face I consider this face lathering.

I recently received an AP Shave Co. new brush that has their newest synthetic knot: 26mm SilkSmoke Fan/Flat Top Hybrid. The knot is not set that deep per my request to allow for a tad more splay. He & I came to that decision based on e-mails and disclosure that I am primarily a face latherer. As I also like short stubby handles to better "palm" the brush I opted for his Signature Ivory + Red handle.

This is a wonderful knot right on par with my favorite 26mm Tuxedo Fan brush. Perhaps they are the same knot but just in different colors(?). Regardless, this is simply a marvelous synth knot that set a tad higher for a smidgen of splay just nestles dead nuts in the "Goldilocks" zone of backbone & splay. What a pleasure to use a synth that has 99% of the softness of a Cashmere knot, yet has just the right amount of backbone for face lathering. That is why I like the "fan" style synth knots. (y)
