Anyone own a Seiko 5?

I need a new daily wear watch and have seen these on Ebay for £60. They have great write ups for reliability and value for money and made in Malaysia I believe. Seems a lovely watch for the money. I did buy a cheap Russian Vostok Auto for the same price a while ago tough and the movement seized after a year.

Anyone can give me the lowdown?

Ah Penfold, the Seiko 5 is light years ahead of the Vostok. I've owned several Seiko mechanical watches, including a 5, and you can't go wrong with them. They're bulletproof; the Toyota of watches. I currently have a Vostok manual wind and it is a really, really bad timekeeper, unlike any of the Seikos I've owned.

Had a Seiko dive watch with the same movement (7S26) used by a lot of the 5-range it was a good, solid watch.
The only thing I didn't like, that particular movement is auto wind only, not an issue if you wear it daily.

Yes, very reliable... Can take a surprising amount of abuse.

I have got this and I really like it, reliable and I can tell time even without my reading glasses, though weekday is tricky, mine arrived set in arabic, originally thought it was japanese as watch is made in japan, never switched to english because so small I cannot read it anyway :)

Same here, I have a Monster which uses the same movement and it's brilliant. I don't mind that it's auto wind only, a gentle shake gets it going within a few seconds and then wearing it winds it fully.

I have been using Seikos for the last 20 years, now I'm on my second Seiko 5, they are great watches but the only downside is they loose time. If I don't correct mine in 5 days it looses 4 minutes. Perhaps I got a duff one but my previous Seiko 5 which I bought around 11 or 12 years ago felt better quality but it may be my imagination.
If you can pay little more, I suggest that you go for Seiko's Kinetic range, much better than 5's

Yep, someone here said the Toyota of watches and I tend to agree.

I only ever owned a Lorus KineticI bought in Argos around 2000 for £30 and it is always with me, never missed a beat.

Lorus is a sub brand of Seiko-Epson as far as I can tell and the Kinetic movement is a work of art imho.

I owned a Seiko 5, really nice watch although I killed mine on a ski-slope. As others have effectively said, it does what it says on the tin. If it doesn't claim to be waterproof, it won't be, as I discovered. I now have one of their dive watches that is built like the proverbial although the crystal is liable to scratching.

I am sure that everyone knows this already but it is worth repeating: As with buying all watches on eBay, be careful, there are a lot of fakes out there. Some classic Seiko 5s are worth a lot of money and so are worth faking.

@Rohleder looking at that one £60 from Lloyds jewellers.

Kinetic or quartz is cheating lol. I am intrigued to see if a mechanical watch this cheap can be fairly accurate and reliable. They do look nice. The specs say -30/+45 secs a day so losing 5 mins a week @Sezer1974 seems within spec though the forums say many are much more accurate: we'll see. I have a cheapo Lorus Seiko quartz which is surprizingly good but i like mechanical stuff. I have an Eterna WW2 military watch but too nice to wear every day.

@matteob mine was a mechanical, I dont like quartz watches. I wore it every day for 6 months and didn't need to correct the time once.

That is unusual for a mechanical even COSC-spec is +/- 5 seconds a day. I've not checked my Monster properly but it's running approx one minute a week slow, although it ran fast by about two minutes per week for a few months until it was run in. TBH as long as it's within a minute or two it's close enough for me and the second hand is to show that it's running.

My Scurfa quartz is about 1 second per week. :)
