Anyone on here smoke a pipe? Some advice needed

Hi Chaps

Anyone here smoke a pipe? I know it's a terrible habit but I really enjoy the smell of a pipe. I did buy a pipe several years ago and I never really got into it because I couldn't find the right tobacco...I bought a couple of packs of tobacco but they went to waste as it was too much and they unfortunately weren't the flavours I thought they would be. I'm after that elusive one you have in your mind but can't ever find it!

Just wondering if anyone can recommend good places to get samples from? I'd love to buy several small samples so I can get a good idea of what floats my boat (normal, aromatics, balkan, virginia, American etc!) , but it seems a lot of these online shops have only one brand in their samples, or it's not the decent quality tobacco...

I also read about Captain Black, but samples of this don't seem to exist, seems like i'd have to fork out for a whole tin!

Any advice chaps? Or could anyone help me out here? Can trade some razors, or vintage blades :)

Warm regards

GW

I took up pipe smoking just several months ago and am really enjoying it , just recently bought some briar pipes after starting with hardwood and cob pipes .
Sample wise I used smoke-king , I cannot recommend their samples highly enough .
I had two lots of samples , eight different tobaccos in each sample , enough for a couple of pipe fills . Out of these samples I found three tobaccos that I liked and bought 50 gram tins , or multiples of .
I had tried a pipe before on a few occasions but not with a sampler of tobaccos , having an opportunity to find a tobacco that suits your palate makes a world of difference .
Enjoy .

Thanks chaps! I had seen the smoke king samples, but the top 8 one is out of stock. Which samples did you go for Geordie?

I always remember the smell of going into the pet shop when I was a kid, the old chap who owned it was always puffing on his pipe, the shop smelt lovely. That's the same aroma i'm after, but no idea what it was - normal, or aromatic etc etc! :)

I might do the aromatic sample and the top 8 best seller sample when it comes back in!

I wonder if we could get a group together who might all like to try some high end well reviewed pipe baccy, I could then buy full tins and split them up into small ziplock bags? Would anyone be interested in that?

The old chap in the pet shop would probably have been smoking Condor or St Bruno. Both are usually referred to as Lakeland in style.

Don't rule out these supermarket, over-the-counter classics. They're still around for a reason.

Condor in a Falcon pipe is my staple but I'll throw in a classic Balkan / English now and then. Dunhill My Mixture 965 for example. I used to buy Errinmore Balkan Mixture but that's out of production now.

I can't commit to group buys unfortunately but I'm sure you'll find a couple of takers.

Thanks for the info Joe, it's a difficult one because I don't want to dedicate to full pouches to check them out :(

Fingers crossed I can find some people to do a group buy with! Not many pipe smokers on here by the looks of things though...

If anyone reads this and is interested in splitting on a few different well reviewed pipe tobaccos then do register your interest. If we got 10 people together we could get a great mix for a decent price :)

They seem to have changed the samples around a little since I had mine , I settled on Dunhill Durbar , Rattray's Bagpiper's Dream , also partial to Lane Buttered Rum and Gawith Hoggarth Exclusive Black Cherry , it actually makes your mouth water when you smell it in the jar !
Totally agree with Joe though , Condor is a fine smoke , I would be happy to smoke that and nothing else .
As for a group buy , sorry no , I get mine duty free now .

In days gone, I used to love the Gawith Black Cherry hand-rolling tobacco. The smell (even to non-smokers) was all that you say. The government has recently banned the sale of flavoured hand-rolling tobaccos on the grounds that they were 'too appealing'. You can, however, buy atomisers of the different flavourings actually used by Gawith, with which to flavour your own tobacco. But I daresay that it's only a matter of time before the government ban those as well.

Thanks for the input chaps. I've compiled a few baccys that look like good contenders for a group buy/sample pack of decent quality tinned/pre-packed stuff:

Condor Ready Rubbed - http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/1103/gallaher-limited-condor-ready-rubbed-green
Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired Flake - http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/5214/mac-baren-hh-old-dark-fired
Samuel Gawith St James Flake - http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/2674/samuel-gawith-st-james-flake
Ashton Artisans Blend - http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/2534/ashton-artisans-blend
Samuel Gawith Skiff Mixture - http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/1033/samuel-gawith-skiff-mixture

Condor is a Virginia, aromatic tobacco (Alcohol / Liquor, Floral Essences). A classic Lakeland style over the counter tobacco, seems to be loved by many and probably a very recognisable smell in the UK back in the day!

Mac Baren HH Old dark fired flake is a Virginia/Burley mix, no flavourings added - great reviews

Samuel Gawith St James Flake is a Virginia/Perique mix (a VaPer) - great reviews

Ashton Artisans Blend is an English style with Black Cavendish, Latakia, Oriental/Turkish, Perique and Virginia. I found this when looking for an alternative to Dunhill Nightcap - it gets cracking reviews.

Samuel Gawith Skiff Mixture came up in my search for a better alternative to Dunhill Early Morning pipe (an Oriental), this gets great reviews. Contains Latakia, Oriental/Turkish and Virginia

I chose all the above after quite a bit of research - I wanted to compile a decent selection that contained different types of tobaccos, and selected only ones that scored highly on tobaccoreviews.com (both by score and as user favourites).

Anyone interested in splitting on it five ways? 10g of each (50g total)? Cost is probably going to be about £17-18 posted. I've asked a mod if I can do a group buy thing, still waiting to hear back, but if it's ok with them then i'll stick it in the group buy section with a cost. I've got some food grade ziplock bags on the way :)

If there is any more interest, and any others that people wish to try, maybe we could expand it a bit. Open to suggestions!
