Angle when going ATG?

sonny

try squeezing the brush to get more water out before you start.

i know this sounds counter productive, why bother soaking it if your going to wring it all out again.
it gives the brush a pre-heat and there will still be water in it after squeezing, you can always add more.
if there's too much in it too start with it could be drawing the lather in.

is it runny?

as for WTG i use 4-5 on my fatboy and dial down to 2-3 for any ATG/XTG passes, i haven't used it for a while so can't recall any angle issues.
i must subconciously alter it until it works

Am I right in thinking you are bowl lathering? If so, have you tried face lathering as it gets the warm lather straight on to your face. For the 2nd/3rd passes I just hold the tip of the brush under the hot tap for a second then swirl it around my face again. The lather is rejuvenated and I start again.

As regards ATG on the neck, I am starting to think about giving up on it. I can get a pretty smooth shave with my vintage Gillette but almost always nick myself in the process. I just don't think it's worth it. I'm actually not certain about going for BBS on the rest of my face either as, even though I can achieve it, my beard has not grown back sufficiently in 24 hours to make my next shave that necessary. Anyway, rambling now as usual, will stop! :shave

Sorry, Yes, I forgot to mention I am bowl lathering. I'll try that: straight onto face. sounds like a good idea. cheers

Ok. Had a shave this morning. straight lather onto face. not a good idea lol. Ended up with a paste on my face and no lather. Daft question: should i get a better/more lather with hard water or soft? I know hard water produces more scum/limescale.

When face lathering with soaps I've discovered the power of the Semogue 1305 boar brush (see threads in Bruashes or talk to Teiste, leader of the Semogue Boar Cult!). They tend to be used for soaps rather than creams, but I expect you'd get good results. Worth doing a bit of research. The beauty is that they are so much cheaper than badger brushes, so well worth a punt. Mine was around a tenner inc p&P from Vintage Shave. Stick with it man, you'll get there!!
