Afternoon all,

So I recently discovered DE razors just before Christmas after shaving with cartridges for the last 19 years. What a mistake that was! I only really shave 3 times a week (not because the hair doesn't grow, just by choice. I have sensitive skin). I've always been an advocate of men's grooming, but this has added a whole new level to it.

I already have a Merkur 23C (long handle), a MÜHLE R41 and 2 razors that were gifted to me which I have no clue what they are. I'm looking at buying a DE89 from Edwin Jagger next and asking for a OneBlade for my birthday. My goal for this year is to purchase a Gillette fatboy. I'll have to put some money away each month as I don't have a lot of expendable cash. It's an absolute rabbit hole this game, but at least when you are buying something it has a practical use.

My starter for 10 question is, do the different brands of razor and types ACTUALLY make a difference to the shave or is most of it technique? I've heard differing views.

Looking forward to getting to know some of you and I hate you all in advance for continuing to lead me down the DE razor rabbit hole!

welcome , opinon,s differ on your starter for 10 . my take is technique if you have it you can shave with any razor, soap, cream, blade etc , you wish .. i would pick 1 razor , 1 blade, 1 soap/cream use it & only those for 30 days or 30 shave,s repeatedly to give you a baseline for technique, also to find what type of razor/blades/soap/creams you prefer ... :)

Hi and welcome to TSR!

There's some truly horrendous razors out there but these tend to be cheap Chinese ones. You already own some good razors.

My advice would be to perfect your technique first. I didn't follow this advice and it's highly likely you won't either ;). If you do have your heart set on a new razor, @Salt lane runner has a RazoRock Game Changer 0.84 for sale for £40 delivered which is a fantastic stainless steel razor that will outlast you.

I've heard the 0.84 is a great razor. I'm sure it will be on my list of ones to buy at some point. It's an addicting habit that I'm already struggling to kick!

Welcome to TSR. My take is that results are about 95 per cent down to technique, 5 per cent down to gear. If you're looking to get another razor, I'd advise against either the DE89 or the Fatboy. The DE89 is quite similar in character to the 23C, barring the long handle, and I always thought the Fatboy was a bit over rated, particularly given the high price they command. Slim adjustables are just about as good (it's a subject for much fruitless debate which is better) and tend to be a lot cheaper. But better than either are the vintage Gillette New razors made in England in the 1930s, or even the Gillette Old or New Improved models. You might even pick up a rhodium plated Gillette Aristocrat for the price of a Fatboy, with a bit of research and patience.

Post up some pictures of the unknown razors, I'm sure someone here would be able to identify them.

IMO, you could just get the DE89 head and use the R41/23C handle (it will fit) from here.

Before going for a FatBoy, I'd recommend at looking at buying a Gillette Tech. You could get them on Ebay for less than a Tenner.

You can get a decent set up of razor, brush, soap and blades for not that much, as long as one has the best possible technique then they'll get great shaves.
