Almost about to Give up

Thanks Mbarn; but unfortunately the Excel, in my opinion, is nowhere near the standard of the Original Sensor. I do believe that the original Sensor blades were discontinued many years ago; they now therefore are sold (if you can get them) at a premium.

The Ebay number I provided was for the original sensor blades. I was just saying that if Excel was ok, they are 50% cheaper
Here's a picture of Ebay

Of course Mbarn; that price is better than I paid 2 years ago, when I shelled out £14.00 for a 10 pack; but in 2015 I bought 50 blades at £9.95 per 10. So £12.99 per 10 is an exceptionally good price. As the thread started out, I'm really trying to get to grips with the DE; but must leave it a few days for the cuts on my face to heal up! Then, I will have another go.

Go down to Boots and pick up the Wilkinson Sword Classic for a fiver.
It's mild and will get you good results while you improve your technique and your face heals. If you still have carts, use them during the week and try a leisurely shave with the DE at the weekend. It will come together. Sometimes it just takes a but longer.

Well cuts almost healed up so just had another shave, still with my Muhle 89 twist and Feather Blade (I have listened and will try the yellow WS razor from Boots with a different blade). Again cuts around the moustache region. My view thus far is DE shaving is good if you have a lot of time and can do more than one pass, but for a quick shave, I believe that the Gillette Sensor Cartridge Blade gives a far better result, especially on a one pass. I appreciate that some people consider shaving to be a hobby, but I do not see it as a hobby no more than washing my hair or taking a shower or cleaning my teeth. I see these processes as something I like/need to do every day as part of my hygiene routine and to make me feel good. I therefore need a quick shave preferably with no cuts. There is also more additional time taken with the lathering routine and the cleaning up of the bush and the mixing bowl etc, which one does not need should one use say Gillette Shaving Gel for sensitive skin. Admittedly, there are cost savings to be had by using the DE method, but I personally do not think DE shaving lends itself to every day shaing, unless one's beard grows at an incedible rate, which mine does not, even though I need a shave every day.

I think Rhubarb above makes a good point. I remember many many years ago I was very ready in GE Trumpers Shop in Jermyn street to shell out around £300 for the Straight razor, strop, wooden shaving bowl, soap etc (and that was a fair amount 30 odd years ago); I am glad I didn't, but had I done so I may have just mastered the art by now. It's funny, but before I invested in the Muhle, I contacted them and enquired if I would get a better shave with the Muhle compared with my Gillette Sensor. The reply came back, that I should get an equally good shave with the Muhle.

I have watched many on-line tutorials, the best of which I found were by Geo Fatboy, which I found very informative and the one submitted by riverrun above, about establishing the direction of beard growth is also very good. Yes, a lot of research went in, but overall and at the moment I am still in favour of the Gillette Sensor 2 Blade Cartridge System c/w Gillette Sentive Gel.

At the end of the day it's all about personal choice/preference.

I look forward to any further comments, should anyone have any.
Kind regards, whitesix.

You've got to do what works for you and it may well be that cartridges are the best option. I'm going to throw something else in for consideration though:

This thing is quick and absolutely mindless. Can be bought in the UK from Executive Shaving but you're looking at a £70 investment upfront. I've been using it for two weeks as I wanted something I could use quickly in the mornings that didn't give me the irritation I got from Fusion cartridges. After getting used to it, I consistently got BBS finishes with ease. My only gripe was it lacked the skill of a DE razor - sounds like this won't be an issue for you though. YMMV of course but this could be the kind of thing that suits you?

Thanks Boycie83, very much appeciated; not too worried about the skill of the DE; need a quick shave with no cuts. The perfect shave in my humble opinion comes from ("my" barber) in India / Goa, but he is very very good and is very detailed in what he does; no talk, pure concentration!!

A suggestion for you: Try using a facial cleansing cream like Noxema Deep Cleansing as a pre-shave product. I apply a good layer of that, moisten my face with a hot Towell and lather up.

I use either Proraso green, Nivea sensitive Skin, Williams Mug soap or Cavendish. To be honest, I like all my soaps but the Williams is by far the best.

I use a Parker Variant set on 5 for the first pass WTG and have the time so I do a second pass on 3 across the grain and a final pass on 1 against the grain. I find Astra Super Platinum, Nacet and Shark blades the most comfortable and effective so far. I get just about a Baby Bottom Smooth result with Mary a cut or blemish.and have only been shaving this way for about 2 months.

Well done Erasmus9 - good result. I think I've been DE shaving for around 3 months approximately. I always use Pears soap as a pre-wash, then Proraso White (sensitive) pre-shave and their soap in the white plasic bowl. I have some Shark Blades but have not used them as yet. I did 2 passes yesterday, but really need to get a good result in just one pass.

I've just noticed the proraso white soap aspect. It's massive sub par in quality. There are plenty of people who can get a good shave with it, but those same guys could shave with almost anything. I've tried 100 soaps, and I'm yet to find one as poor as proraso sensitive, even rating tinned gel over it. You don't have to spend loads, but something from Stirling or Barrister & Mann, as well as many other brands are so much better at protecting the skin.

Thanks Mbarn; the reviews said it was good but not having any experience I couldn't tell what's good and what is not. I must admit, it didn't seem to give much protection. I have also tried Parmolive soap stick, but that didn't seem to be that good either (well for my sensitive skin). I will give it another go with one of the ones you have suggested. Thanks again, kind regards, whitesix

Thank you Mbarn for your very kind offer, which is very much appreciated. I think however I will perhaps try the examples that you have previously stated. However I think I am going to again allow my face to heal for a while, it's becoming a problem when one gets cuts every time one shaves. I can't unfortunately allow myself, what I believe to be the time needed, to carry out DE shaving on a daily basis. Thanks again, kind regards, whitesix.
