3one6 user experience

I finally got a shave with the 3one6 that did not include any nicks or weepers! Woohoo!

I made two changes, they are:

1. I used an Astra SP blade. Smooth and sharp - no complaints here.

2. I rode the the cap much more than I normally do and I think this was the dominant factor.

It is clear to me that the 3one6 is more aggressive than the DE89 so after a bit of research I changed my angle of attack. Bingo! Success!

Got a dang fine shave this morning so now at least I have a plan to work with. With the shallow angle of attack I can see where the lighter aluminum handle might be a benefit; I have the all steel handle.

Thank you all for listening to the ups and downs of my 3one6 journey! You are indeed a fine group!

The 3one6 is way more aggressive than the de89. Your first shave should have alerted you to that fact -- and also the mixed reviews on its aggressiveness/mildness. Glad you found the right blade/angle combination for your face. YMMV.
Yeah, what I really want is a steel DE89 or maybe EJ can have a version of the 3one6 that is less aggressive. Kind of like the Game Ghanger .68 vs .84.

Indeed, I did find the angle that works for me but that doesn't mean I like shaving that way. I don't find riding the cap very intuitive. In any case, I will give it some more time to see how I adapt.

Blade exposure looks neutral but the gap is larger than the DE89. Therefore at the neutral angle use less pressure. Here is an illustration on one of your pictures; the blade is not clearly in focus but you get the idea. This design is not significantly dissimilar from the Game Changer .84 in terms of blade gap.

I just had an idea - we'll see whether or not it is a brilliant idea? Lol!

Tomorrow I will put the 3one6 top cap on my DE89. The 3one6 cap looks a bit thicker but will give it go and see if it works.

Everyone wants a SS DE89. That's what we thought we were getting. I find the angle a bit awkward, too. The only reason I'm keeping it is because the price was so good, and after reading reviews, I don't think there's going to be a big second-hand market.

Putting the 3one6 cap on a DE89 baseplate doesn't do any good. The 3one6 cap has blade alignment tabs that prevent the cap from seating properly. Oh well, was worth a try.

However, the DE89 cap fits on the 3one6 baseplate and does appear to reduce the gap. Hmmm?

Even if this configuration works I'm not sure what the point is? The whole idea for me was to get a cap with an integrated, strong screw. This configuration still gives me a Zamak screw but maybe I can see how well the ridges work in the safety bar.

Dithering and futzing about from the Great Plains of America.

I replaced the cap of the 3one6 with the cap from one of my DE89s and it shaved just fine. Much less aggressive than with the 3one6 cap.

I do have a replacement Muhle R89 head with the brass screw so I will put that on and build my mild, steel, brass, and Zamak razor. LoL! But, hey, it shaves well and is still mostly EJ and I have to admit that skinny little 3one6 steel handle is growing on me. :)

@ike it has been most educational so thank you. I'm actually yet to use mine having been in hospital but am itching to get grips with what I think is beautiful bit of British engineering and a great addition to the DE razor world.

Gairdner,

I have been in the hospital a time or two myself and I understand your need for normalcy. Hammer and saw, huh? Ugh!!!

I remember convalescing at home once and I joked with my wife that to pass the time I watched all of the TED talks - twice! Just kidding of course, but man, there are some strange and interesting topics covered in those TED talks.

I do hope you have learned a thing or two on this forum, and maybe even in this thread, I know I have and it can be humbling. Even though I believe the 3one6 is too aggressive for me, I certainly agree that it is a beautiful piece of British engineering and steel.

Take care and get well - your razor and garden are waiting!
