If there are any fans of realtime multiplayer strategy games out there, try googling Warzone 2100 resurection.
You can download Warzone 2100 (my favourite game) for FREE. There are different versions available, some work, some don't. There are also Warzone 2100 clips on Youtube.
I have played against my brother in law on line which was great. Its especially satifiying seeing your brother in laws base under heavy artilliary fire whilst your tanks storm in virtually unopposed.

I still remember playing Warhammer 40000 for seemingly weeks on end - use a D20 for this, blah blah - gives me nightmares when I walk past Games Workshop

I still have orgs and marines in lead! On my display case, wife hates them the kids thought
They were great until I showed them how to play it, then there attention disappered.
Lol

The first and only time I played a Warhammer game, I won. This put me off somewhat.

More recently I played a naval battle (desktop) (big desk). I was HMS Hood and Bismarck and my friends kid was the Prinz Eugen and the Bismarck. The game is as realistic as it can be. Size of guns, what your ship is doing, whether another ship is firing on the same target all get taken into account.
Anyway, Prince of Wales lost its forward turrets early in the game. Hood tried to sneak behind the German line to divide their fire but got hit several times, lost speed and the Germans got away. I lost to a kid, but I did better than the Royal navy in real life.
We then played the battle of the river plate. I did quite well as the British to begin with copying the real life strategy. Then a few good hits blew my ships out of the water.

The trouble of desktop games is they take so long to play.

In my teens I played a war game - Eastern Front I think it was. I quite enjoyed it but it seemed to take hours to get all of the units in place before you started.

I found a ZX Spectrum simulator for Mac and have been revisiting 1985 without the C90 cassettes.

Pop a Peel show on (MP3) boot up the virtual Speccie (Mac OS X) and I'm in a thin tie and white trainers all over again (actually the kids really are wearing these - sans irony as they don;t remember the first time they were "in")
