What Watch Are You Wearing Today?

No pic because I don't have a smart phone & have no idea where my camera is but i'm wearing my trusty Traser stainless which replaced a £30 Casio which in turn replaced the crappiest watch i've ever owned - A Rolex GMT Master with the Pepsi bezel, bought new by myself from a Rolex main dealer. Complete & utter crap. I sent it back to Rolex within a month as it was gaining 8 seconds a day. They kept it for a fortnight & adjusted it. ( making all their marketing bollocks about the stringent testing that they go through look exactly that - bollocks. ) On its return it was still gaining 5 seconds a day so it got sent straight back again with a "must try harder" message attached. Another fortnight passed then it returned with an attached letter saying that they couldn't get it 100% accurate because it wasn't quartz ! ( I wish i'd kept this letter & sent it to the ASA.) A couple of months later, the triangular pointer at the end of the red hand fell off, jamming the second hand against the minute hand. Back again it went for repair. After about a year, every time I clenched my fist, the strap pinged open. The Rolex dealer was no use, just wanting more money for a strap with an extra clasp on it. He also recommended that I got it serviced. What a load of shit - a watch that not only couldn't tell the time but fell apart & wouldn't stay on my wrist AND needed servicing after only a year. I sold the fucking pile of junk & bought a cheap plastic Casio which beat it in every measurable way. This Rolex cost me over £1800 in 1988. Obviously I was unlucky because plenty of fellas on here love theirs. Shouldn't boil down to luck though, not at those rip-off prices.

I've been looking at a longines flagship heritage 60th anniversary watch.its a beautiful timepiece but unfortunately out of my price range at present ( sorry unable to put photo on ).

Rotary Windsor (internet photo, couldn't be bothered to photograph my wrist.) A recent acquisition and I'm really pleased with it, not usually a fan of quartz but for an attractive "everyday beater" in the dress watch style these are hard to beat for the £20 or so they sell for on the s/h market.

Back story.

I had a pretty nasty vertigo attack not too long ago, one so bad I ended up on the floor of the bathroom for most of a day. At that time I realized that even had I needed help there was no way I could go the few feet literally needed to get to either the land line phone or my cell phone.

I've worn a watch though since long before I started shaving so the idea of one of the new Dick Tracy Two-Way wrist radios seemed like a great idea. I went to my cell phone carrier and found the nerddejour who was at the door playing a game on his something and definitely gave the impression that I was an unneeded imposition in his life.

I explained that I used cell phones to make calls and send text messages and need a watch that would do that. He told me about apps that would tell me what my friends were doing or eating or where I parked my car and would get HBO and Netflix and stream video and YouTube and find restaurants and ...

I explained that I used cell phones to make calls and send text messages and need a watch that would do that.

He said they no longer had the phone and message only plan but I could get five lines for $100.00 and a free phone to give to a friend.

I explained that I used cell phones to make calls and send text messages and need a watch that would do that.

He said I would need a new line that was twice what I currently paid and my current phone would not work so I would need a new phone and new line for it and if I put down a $75.00 deposit he would try to get one shipped in.

So I said thanks and went to the carrier that has an office a couple miles from my house.

They had a watch in stock and a two line plan and a nicer cell phone than my old Windows Phone and it would be $10.00 a month more than the single line at the old carrier. And it makes calls and sends and gets messages.

I did spend a week or so killing off all the other things it tried to do, like track my steps or tell me to move my butt or count calories. The new phone works connects to the new watch using bluetooth and should I forget and leave my phone at home it will forward calls to the watch that also has its own phone number. And it works. And it tells time. And it does just what I need and has stopped doing all the stuff I don't need.

Can anyone suggest a smartwatch to buy for an elderly relative that lives on their own.
The ability to make a call if they fall and can't get up, is the most important feature
There phone is an iPhone......(UK based)
Thanks..The Toff

I don't have an answer on the smart watch side, and maybe you already know this, but if they have an iPhone 6 or later, you can use Siri voice commands to make an emergency call to a contact or 999, without having to touch the phone. If it's not enabled, it's very easy to setup.
It's as simple as saying “hey Siri” and then the command. I use it daily in my car to dictate texts/make calls.
Older iPhones require you to press and hold the home button.
If they cannot speak, there's an option to call emergency services with button presses, but I don't remember the exact sequence.

Cheers mate, but they leave the phone lying around and both my mum and dad have had falls when they were alone and couldn't reach their phones.
Looking for something they will wear all the time.

Hi, this is similar to my Mums and it works a treat it gives me a piece of mind. We got this from local company to us

There may well be companies local to your area that does the same.

You could get in touch with your local council they helped us.

Hope this helps

Samsung and Apple both make smart watches that can also have their own phone line and also connect bluetooth to the iPhone when it is within about 30 feet.

The important thing is to also have a stand alone mode for the watch so that they can make calls even if they go off and forget their phone.
